Not that I can ever bring myself to use the new ones I own, at the current sealed price of $50 tp 60 USD each...

Of the ones I actually use...Maxell MX-S or TDK MA-X...maybe the TDKs by a hair. All 1990 or older, tho. I have 2002ish MX-S and they don't hold a candle to the pre 1990 versions..

My favorite cassette brand is the Nakamichi Reference Tapes and the series is the ZX which should also be the same as the early version of TDK MA.

In terms of cassette tapes, I used to appreciate the quiet, low-friction quality transport wheels and housings that the old school BASF cassettes employed... I "perceived" better sound quality, higher re-recording durability and less hiss... allowing me to, without guilt, continue my avoidance of the Dolby NR button. Of course those were the days of four screws holding together a more rugged and heat resistant clamshell... and with heavy use, occasionally there were times a careful spool repair or splice was needed.

So, using the old PP&M lyric... "Where have all the BASF tapes gone???"
