i just couldn't resist the bargain. i've been considering a complete re-do of a bicycle trailer system i'm building because i only have one pair of 96db proel flash 8P speakers to use as mains and would either have to point them forwards towards me making finding space for heavy batteries an issue, or pointing them backwards where i can mount batteries under them and get better coverage for group rides, but lousy sound for me.

at first i was thinking of building a full fiberglass system and was looking into cheap DS18 drivers for mids, but they sound kind of thin and screechy in any demo i've heard on youtube.

i was browsing amazon and sorting 4 star plus speakers by price from low to high for potential use in a smaller on bike system that would sound better than a $60 Alpatronix AX440 bluetooth speaker and stumbled on this CRAZY priced closeout on off white JBL Northridge N26AW II speakers and was particularly impressed by their sound in this video:

i got an AMAZING deal gambling on my EXCELLENT sounding (italian) proels and just couldn't resist this deal on the JBLs after hearing that video. i ALMOST bought 2 pairs, and still might if the 1st pair blows me away and is still available, but they're only 88dB rated which would seriously hinder my system's output, whereas adding them as a second pair would SLIGHTLY increase my output and give me a second pair of lighter speakers i could point forward as well as not get blasted at close range at tailgate parties etc.

if anyone was looking for a cheap pair of "entry level speakers", i doubt you'll find anything this good and this cheap at the moment.

 i've been listening to the JBLs for about 10 minutes, and so far, they aren't blowing me away. their cabinets are really light and made of similar "brittle" plastic that model kits are made of. the binding posts are on the cheap side and the terminals are too closely spaced to easily connect bare wires, but they get the job done.

the thing that's making me indifferent is that they don't have anywhere near the bass my 6 1/2" JBL bookshelves had (yet) and there's a high mids/lower treble emphasis that's making them sound thin & spitty. i don't know that i'd spend the $200 list price for them, but they'll pass for $50.

here's to hoping they smooth out with some break in. they MIGHT have a touch more bass than my bass challenged proels, but other than that, the proels are much more laid back sounding which is surprising as they have waveguide tweeters, but then again the JBLs are probably using poly tweets.

 oh they sounded bad cold out of the box, but now that they're loosening up, i'd call the sound acceptable with potential to be pretty good, but they were spitting like a rabid racoon in the first few minutes.

 i don't know what's going on, but within an hour's worth of listening to the new speakers, my amp started making a squealing noise. after checking all of my connections, i started listening again, and in less than a half hour, the sound became intermittent and the squealing returned. after that, i rewired my entire power system with 8 gauge (up from 12) and reset the speaker wires in the terminals, and again, even sooner, the sound became intermittent again even though i was listening at quite low volumes.

just before shutting everything down until i can hopefully find some answers, i noticed that the right channel doesn't seem as loud as the left on the new speakers.

 Yup, not bad. I got a pair a few years ago for the back yard. I paid 65 for the pair.

 Since you asked for comments about sound quality maybe you (and Scholl) should consider getting another pair of whatever speakers you were listening to when you watched the YouTube video. After all, they are actually the source of the sound that you are listening to, not the ones you are looking at on YouTube, other than the sound is being recorded off of the speakers on YouTube and sent over the Internet.

 i was using superlux 681 EVO headphones to monitor the video, so i'm pretty sure i got a reasonably accurate sample of the sound quality, though they sounded much brighter and lower in bass in another video. that's really not a problem though as they'll be subbed.

i'll find out soon enough what they sound like first hand. i'm inclined to believe they won't disappoint as the very first speakers i ever bought were JBLs that outclassed everything at their price point at the shop where i bought them and the reviews are mostly favorable too.

THAT's why i like online demos and hate all talk no demo reviews and "demos". i would not have bought my proel flash 8Ps, even at the NICE $120 i paid for the pair were it not for some decent sounding online videos of their larger siblings. they wound up sounding even better than expected with an even smoother midrange that loves womens' vocals and a lightning fast, but not at all spitty treble i'd call more laid back, probably because of some rolloff.

i'm not expecting the last word in fidelity, just something that'll be decent sounding enough for the bargain price i got on them, especially once i plug their distortion holes, and possibly increase cabinet resonances as has happened with thin walled mission & energy minis.

 cool! glad i helped someone else get a deal while it's still available.

right after i ordered my pair of nice sounding $100 proels and shared here, they were sold out by the next day. i think they might have only had 8 of those.

Cycling is about getting outside and into the elements and you don't need to be listening to Queen or Slayer in order to experience that. Immerse yourself in the rhythm and pain, not in whatever 80's hair band you call "music". See Rule #5 and ride your bike.

 uh... i'd NEVER under ANY circumstances EVER listen to slayer. that's one of the FORCES OF EVIL that i'm FIGHTING AGAINST, along with negativity inspiring gangsta crap & soulless techno.

i'm fighting to RESTORE the positive energy of TRUE (ANTI-gang) hip-hop. i'm fighting to give people the option to dance the music they're denied by the same CONSPIRACY that killed off racial unifying hip-hop and replaced it with gangsta/booty rap & technotronic.

it's as much as a political statement as anything and i KNOW in my heart, from EXPERIENCE, that people, women in particular, are hungry for the kinds of funky beats i'm fighting to share because NO-ONE ELSE WILL!

i TRIED, once, to apply for a DJing job in gangsta POSEUR country oregon where the same punks dancing to "if you're a scared mother effer do your dirt" would be crapping their pants in any REAL hood i've LIVED IN and survived, but the resident sucker DJ there wouldn't even give me a chance to prove my shee's better working for free, conspiring AGAINST the forces of positivity.

i've had similar experiences at 2 parties i've attended (against my will) where i've gotten people up & dancing to the cassettes i used to carry with me all the time only to have racist sourpusses pitch a fit and ruin everything so no one danced at their lame parties. i still have a grudge about that.

eff the haters! i will not go quietly into the night! i will fight for upbeat funky dance tunes, and when it's MY PARTY, unlike other peoples', WILL put negative instigators in their place.

i've already cruised with a little system that haters (pretty much any can't dance satan worshipping heavy metal piece of shee racist) hated, but that women LOVED, even running up and freaking (humping) on my leg because i had the beats no-one else does.

if you don't like the beats i play, get to steppin'. you WILL NOT ruin it for the rest of us.

sorry if i went off on a tangent there. i think i misread the intent of your reply after reading it a second time. i'm just so used to haters fighting my right to dance to what i feel for DECADES by now that i have a hard time picturing anyone having anything POSITIVE to say.

i'm not planning on going through residential areas booming, as so many are quick to jump to the conclusion of, grouping me along with all the other inconsiderate no musical taste having fidiots out there.

my system, if commuting, will play at sane levels with max reserved for tailgate parties, biking events, and dance parties downtown on club nights when every other fidiot DJ plays their disposable trash. there has to be an alternative, and this is the only way. no one else will play anything worth dancing to and i've had it with half my life wasted unable to dance because 99% of DJs that get gigs, at least on the gangsta/techno loving west coast SUCK!

it's ALSO an attempt to lure a mate who likes my style the same way previous systems have drawn the ladies in.

"if you boom it, they will come"

(only i'll THUMP. i hate ported boom. quality over quantity... ANOTHER way i zig when they zag)
