I have a Phillips Magnavox PV98SW powered 50 watt subwoofer (a friend gave me a few years ago). It has an 'audio in' RCA plug connection. Would anyone know how (or if) I could use this with my ipad? I have an extensive music collection, and would love to be able to use this sub somehow with my ipad. Thanks!! linda

 Because the sub cannot reproduce anything except very low sounds, you will want to add other speakers to cover the middle and upper frequencies. The best way to do this is to find a receiver or amplifier with a variable RCA out for the sub, in addition to standard stereo speaker outputs. Connect any standard speakers to the main outs, and run an RCA cable to the sub. Adjust the level of the sub until it sounds balanced. As far as connecting to your iPad, a standard 3.5mm to RCA cable will work, with the RCA end plugged into one of the receiver's inputs.

Alternatively, you could find two RCA Y-splitters and use them to send the iPad audio out to the sub AND to any amplifier (a T-amp would work well here). The amplifier would be used to power two full-range speakers and the sub would fill in the bottom. To maintain balance with the sub, you would want to use the iPad's built-in volume control instead of fiddling with the two separate ones on the amp and sub.

However you wish to implement the sub, you will need two other speakers and an amp to drive them, unless they are powered speakers (computer speakers, for example). If you were to run your iPad's headphone out directly into the sub, you would only hear low rumbling.
