I am trying to put together a modest office system and have found a pair of spendor prelude at a local audio repair shop. The surrounds have been rebuilt but i noticed that the cones had a heavy thick paint on them. I heard them and they sounded pretty good but was wondering if this is a common practice.

The Prelude used bextrene plastic cones. Bextrene was actually fairly resonant so almost every manufacturer used a clear damping coat of PVA(poly vinyl acetate). PVA is also sometimes used on other cones for the same purpose even when it's not as necessary. It's been used on some paper cones and also polypropolene cones even though thet were inherently better damped.

By the way, you're correct. The Prelude was an attempt by Spendor to build a less costly speaker than the classic BC1 that was their main product for years and it was a very nice speaker that kept most of the virtues of the BC1. As I recall it's bass was better damped, the biggest weakness of the BC1.

No, that's unusual. Unless it's OEM, Bad idea to apply
heavy paint to a cone. Sometimes done to stiffen cone,
waterproofing or add mass.

If I come across a faded looking PA
woofer cone, I use vinyl upholstery spray paint
(black].

It's a thin coating and the cone looks like new.
30" is a woofer size (EV 30W)

Kiwi black shoe dye works better on cones than any spray product.

Good idea. The vinyl spray seems like a dye product, does
not look like paint on the cone.

You're probably right about the vinyl spray being a dye, I think the sponge applicator on the Kiwi dye is easer to control (no masking or overspray).
