The local dealer for Mark & Daniel speakers has a demo pair for sale. The reviews I've seen on the web are positive, but I'd be interested in any opinions based on personal experience by AA members. Anyone got anything to report?

I looked into these speakers a couple of years ago when they were just getting started here in the US. I have never heard them mainly because I was thrown off when their CEO was adamantly determined to find out what type of amplifier I had and its current drive into low impedances. I found out why: the speaker with the omnidirectional supertweeter is an extremely low impedance load for the amp. Since I have a very robust solid-state amp, built by Essence and weighing 135 lbs, and since I know the original designer, I asked him for his thoughts on driving that load, something like 1 or 2 ohms. The designer said his amp would drive the speakers but wouldn't necessarily be a great match for the speakers since they weren't optimized to drive such low impedances. One of the big Krells or Jeff Rowland or other big SS muscle amps would probably work fine, but I am not a fan of their sound. You need to know this before going further in considering these speakers.

You may want to read what John Krutke has to say about the objective measurements of the tweeter. http://zaphaudio.com/tidbits/ (Third driver from the top of the page.)

Thanks. From about 1980 to about 1996 I had a pair of ESS speakers that used the AMT tweeter in conjunction with a 10" woofer. I liked them, but always thought the highs were a bit "hot." The M&D is the first speaker I've seen in a long time that uses the Heil tweeter, so it piqued my curiosity. If they were $500/pair, I'd probably buy 'em, figuring I could resell them and get most of my money back if I did not like them. At $1800, or even $1000, I'll almost certainly pass on them. But I may go audition them just for grins, as the dealer is only three miles away.
