Seeking bright sounding phones, preferably under $50 street price [but I'm flexible on this]; preferably without the elephantine bass that seems endemic to nearly all phones regardless of price.

I already own nice Grado 325, which I find adequate for serious listening, altho I'de prefer airier, more open highs with these as well.

I need a cheaper pair for when I go outdoors and listen using a portable cd player. Thus, a light set of phones would be nice.

All cheap phones I've heard so far ($20 Koss, Sony, JVC from Walmart) have severely rolled off highs, submerged mids, and billowing, out of control bass. Seeking the opposite.

Any, and all, info would be appreciated.

If you like your Grado's, move down the line., posted on November 3, 2009 at 14:02:44

Grado has an extensive range of 'phones. I would suspect that they have something you would like. Personally for portable use, I prefer in ear headphones. You might enjoy the etymotic er6 for a little more than you were looking to spend. I'm sure you've already been there, but headfi.org is the place to look for headphones.

Grate-O's are about as bright as it gets. Check out Headphone.com, they have 9 supra aural cans that come close to your price point and their take on each one will tell you whether they are bright or not. My experience would dictate that you stay away from Koss, too bassy.

No exaggregated bass there, that's for sure.
