have you done any listening to the Sim LP5.3?
Is this a relatively new model/revision?
I'm curious after Fremer's quick review of it in the March Stereophile.
Also, do you know anything about US availability of the RS version as listed on Sim's website?
Got a P-5 & W-5 LE from you while in Tennessee, now we're all the way out in south central Washington state (whatta move!).

Dave,

I do have a Sim LP5.3 here and I use it regularly. This is a fairly new product from Simaudio (only been out a year or year and a half at most)... The RS version is Sim's RoHOS compliant models for Europe and they are not normally sold here in the states (though I do recall being told we could special order them and that they would cost much more than the normal US Spec units.... the RS items are not even listed in my dealer price list).

Its a really fine sounding peice. Low noise, very good resolution, nice smooth even tone.

I can check with Sim on what a RS series LP5.3 would cost if you like. LMK

Until I go permamnent staff (if that EVER happens), it's a moot point,
but I think we'll be interested to see the price differential.

The obvious thing that comes to mind is lead-free phono stage,
lead-free (if we upgrade) TSM-MXs.
Do you happen to know what the $$ is for the upgrade on our TSMs?

We've got a line of upgrades to perform sometime:
Bryston 9B-THX: SST
Berning ZH-270: Goldpoint attenuator
TSM-MX: lead-free
Linn LP-12: power supply to ?

in addition to some speaker cables, where we were considering
TG (yeah, I know Bobby's take on silver)
Cardas GR
Audience
(and I see there's now 3 Au24 versions: Au24, Au24e, Au24 LCR matched)
We're trying to find out about auditioning these sometime, but we're 3 1/2 hours from Portland & Seattle, so it ain't gonna be simple.

thanks, DrDave

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you!. US retail for the LP5.3 is $1,500 and I believe the RS version is $700 more!

Give Bobby @ Merlin a call in regard to upgrade cost on your TSM-MXs... To perform the lead free upgrade on a par of TSM-MX's it is around $350 plus shipping (best to check with Bobby to be sure though). Its worth every penny, you will be surprised on how much better the speakers are once upgraded. They will sound fuller, more dynamic and play with a greater ease at all volume levels.

If you can't find any local help on the cable auditioning, let me know and I can see what I can do to help. I have some Cardas and Au24 stuff on hand that we can loan out for a couple of weeks here and there.
