Posted my FIRST ad on AA. Received a response from sender in U.K.
Asked fee questions and wanted pictures that were already attached to AD.
I responded.
Said he wanted to purchase. would send certified check/mo for my asking price plus freight plus amount to hold the equipment till picked up for
shipment. sounds to good to be true. Any suggestions as to my next step.
thanks

It smells fishy, but it may not be a scam, and in any event "buyer beware" is a good way to approach ANY web transaction.

For overseas buyers, simply use WESTERN UNION, there is no recourse in either direction (buyer/seller) if you get the money thru Western Union, you KNOW you've got it...

Never use any form of payment that limits your recourse in any way....that includes PAYPAL...from a sellers POV, PayPal is a risk whether its a foreign or domestic transaction...

I don't quite understand how this can be a "scam". If you hold the item until the check is cashed and cleared, and you are not sending the buyer back any money, I don't see the problem. I never, never ship anything until I have actual cash in hand. Even with Paypal, I never ship until I have removed the money from my Paypal account and have it in my hand.
Anyway, Good Luck.

It may clear your back but in 30-60 days it will be discovered to be fake and the money will be deducted from your bank account.

Really? I had no idea. Is this true in all countries and banks or only for private banks not run by the government?
I'm just wondering because I live in Canada and have never heard of this, ever. As far as I know banks typically have a 5 business day hold on checks and if it clears in those 5 days it's a done deal. That's the point in having a waiting period.
Anyway, I'll be cautious in the future.

Thanks for the info.

They have similar holds here too. If a check comes back it comes out of your account. The account holder is responsible for knowing the checks they deposit are good. I'm not aware of any time limit and it may vary by state.

Check will be a counterfeit. Just ignore any further emails from this character... don't even bother telling him you're passing on his offer.

For future reference... here's a few little indicators if you receive an email about your ad that will tip you off that it's a scam:

They do not mention the specific piece you're selling (i.e. they say "I am interested in your item for sale").

They ask you questions that are clearly answered in the ad, or they ask for pictures when the ad provides pictures.

They offer to pay you an extra "fee" for holding the amp for pick up. Or they say they will send X amount more than you're asking price, and ask you to re-imburse them the difference when you ship.

There are other indicators, but these ones are the most popular to use, as they tend to work (unfortunately).
