hi Jeff
I have Tannoy Westminsters as well. Have been very pleased with the sound of the Jeff Korneff 45 stereo amp. It bettered my Sophia 845 monos except in the lower bass....the 45's seem a little shy below 45 hz or so. Above that they are really superb. I have not listened to a wide range or SET's but i can say that i have listened to a wide range of amp-speaker combos over the past 30 yrs and the Tannoy/Korneff combo is the most satifying yet.
I would love to hear your feedback on amps. I keep wondering about amps by Larry Moore and the Yamamotos

Thanks for the heads up on the Westminster & Korneff combination. How does one get a hold of Jeff Korneff these days? Does he still have a web site?

I'll be exploring amplification as I go, so it should be fun, and I hope to be able to write quite a bit about the Westminsters, as there isn't much out there now.

The Westminsters are being built now, with a tentative delivery time-frame sometime in December. If you have any setup tips on position and such, I'd love to hear about it.

Kind regards,

Jeff

HI Jeff
try reaching Mr. Korneff at trypower@msn.com.
I don't know what his status is in terms of building new amps but he was extremely helpful with my questions and is good guy to chat with.

I love my Westminsters. After 30 yrs of messing around with planars and ESL's I wonder why i didn't try hi eff speakers sooner!!

Thanks everyone for responding. Man, that's one cool list of SETs, with some very innovative circuits and tube combinations.

I just ordered a pair of the Tannoy Westminster Royal SE loudspeakers, so I'm thinking about SETs again, and man, I have to say you guys have some awesome amps!

Best,

Jeff

I've said it a few times before. I've been listening to the 6sn7/26/45 for a couple/few years. Each time I turn it on, there is the sense of balance and it sounding right.

I think there can be more dazzling sounding amps and more exotic sounding amps, but I don't know if an amp can sound more on target.

The 6sn7 is a tube that can provide alot of bloom and it is the first one in the circuit. The 26 shapes the sound getting it ready for the 45. It has its own sound characteristics and it is a tube that compliments the 45 in a certain way. It's own characteristic is to give the horn sound what it needs in audio. It gives the horns a certain piqueness and underbelly which the 45 does not have by itself. The 26 has its own characteristics but interacts with the different output tubes, 45, 300b, and 50, for example, differently.

Then it goes to the 45 which is the reality tube of all tubes. The 45 does not have the earth and exotic potential of the 300b nor the air and ethereal potential of the 2a3, nor the golden audio sound of the 50. That golden audio sound is something. It is just the reality tube, or the deception of reality because it dwells more in the cream of the midrange.

Monobloc active-loaded 56 DC-coupled to a 2A3 with a big ass MQ plate choke parafeed into a nickel TFA 2004. One electron UBT-1B PT into damper diodes into CL on a separate breadboard. Very yummy. Dynamics and bass to die for. 26 and 27 in the on-deck circle.

or

6S4A regulated 6S4A IT-coupled to 300B monos, all Hashimoto iron except for PS which is Hammond/Lundahl/surplus, 5AR4 CLCLC. Not as dynamic but tonally ace.

Oh yeah, all DHTs have the very excellent Tent Labs filament supplies. 0.1 - 0.2 mV noise on the output, input shorted, silence on 103 dB horns.

Bought it as a kit a few years back. EML solid plates here, too.
Extremely reliable, and even with ac on the filaments it is very quiet.

But I probably like my Burgess preamp even better....

Some days I'm amazed by my "no frills" Burgess 45/46 (lol). I suppose everyone is going to recommend the amps that they own (and rightfully so).

The 300B is 5687 SRPP input and 12B4 driver. Volume pots for each channel to allow for minor balance variation in my Altecs. It's nice to listen to CD directly into the amp. Bass is articulated very well on this amp. Dog got sick (vet bills) and I thought I was going to sell this amp. Luckily, the temporary insanity subsided before I made a huge blunder.

I thought maybe a F3 clone could replace one of these amps. No way. It wasn't even close.

Granted that at least one of the other people who mentioned the 46 uses it as a driver. However, I think it makes a great output tube too. With about 1.5 watts in triode, your speakers need to be up to the task. I like a certain type of ST-shape 46 better than any of the tubes in the photo above.

I use mostly 46s in my Burgess amp. Fantastic sound on inexpensive transformers (Transcendar). JB put a switch on this amp to allow for correct operating points between the 45 and the 46. Thought maybe someday I'll switch to Magnequest but it might be that this will never happen (or needs to happen).

I was able to buy several pairs of 46 RCAs and 46 Sylvanias locally at nice prices. Far cheaper than 45s on ebay.

I'm sorry for the slow reply. I relocated to another state last weekend and started a new job this past Monday. I thought the EML solid-plate 45 is an excellent sounding tube. Big soundstage (not bloated) and strong sounding. At least as good as any of the old-stock tubes.

However, the best 46 sounds at least as good in every attribute and better in some (even more powerful sounding and better low-end response). This was a surprise. Factor in the cost differential and this would qualify as a "no brainer".

BTW, do you know exactly what parameters are changed by your 45/46 switch? Thanks.

Gerry

that results in dropping the B+ voltage for the 46 to 288V or 305V. I'm confused by the schematic here and need to ask JB. The 45s run at 335V. It appears that the 46 is being run harder than the tube manuals recommend but I remember reading somewhere that this was okay. If 305V, then the 46 certainly is being run "hard".

I only have one pair of 45s and many 46s and have mostly been using only the 46s.

Hi ! After a couple of PP - KT88 and 807 amps very modified Twin Reverb -65 reissueamp ( for very clean , sparkling sound ) I now would like to build a SE amp for guitar with clean , lowdistorted sound if its possible . Hammond have some 25W SE OT , I think . Or perhaps YouŽll suggest another OT . I have two NOS 811A , some good NOS 6SN7 , 6SL7 , ECC 40 , EL 34 , 12BH7 , 6L6GC , and many 12A..7 tubes . What tubes in the chain from input to output would You suggest ? Lunddahl interstagetr.? Active loads ? CCS ? Very happy for some advice and perhaps even a schematic . 12-15 W power and up would be OK .
( I have used CCS,s in phasesplitters in my PP-amps ... two transistor , from Morgan JonesŽbook .) Stewen

The Coincident Frankenstein Mark2. With 300b output tube 6em7 driver/input and an inter stage transformer this amp is superb. Transparent, dynamic and with excellent tonality, no hint of electronic or mechanical artifact.

Mine weighs close to 100 lbs. The power transformer alone is around 35 pounds. The 10 watts it produces are the best I have heard. Period. Esp. after warming up for 10 minutes.

I have an Audio Note Meishu Line Integrated with upgraded C Core Transformers that sounds substantially nicer than the stock unit. The weak link is the preamp section (an AN M-2). Still, since this is my first venture into SET, I am very happy with this model.

What I'd really like to do is get the Silver Sig power amp version (P-3) of the Meishu and drive it with an M-5 preamp. That's about 164,000 DKK. Divide by 5. I prefer the sound of the Meishu with good transformers to that of the Quest, Conquest or P-4, which is technically better, but lacks the character and richness of the Meishu's sound.

Well, for me any favourite would have to be DHT all the way through. Having said that I'm open to anything that has some of my favourite tubes in - 300b, 10Y, 46, 71A, 26, 01A, 31, 1G4G and 1G4GT (round plate). I've never been as fond of 45 or 2a3 as of the 300b. That's my output tube of choice. But it's fun to rotate the others. No idea about production units, I just build 'em.
