Just listened to the mono 2009 remaster. And WOW! The Auto-double tracking (ADT) and Leslie effects never sounded so good. Really shines on this pressing. Had a question. All I've read about this song, is that EC used his Telecaster "Lucy" to do the lead work. But, this CD really sounds like he used his Les Paul Standard. I think that folks may have been mistaken because ADT effects tend to emphasize high frequency harmonics, esp with the Leslie, too. This gives the lead more of a top end bite, like a Fender Telecaster. But, the mids sure sound Gibson to me. Anyone know the specifics of this song?

Thanks!

Speaking of gently weaping guitars, I read here that George Harrison's son wants to use video games to teach people how to play guitar.
Whatever happened to learning how to play REAL GUITARS?
They can be bought for the price of that video game.

Well I guess that's cool, posted on November 10, 2009 at 04:58:19

I can't get anywhere in Guitar Hero. I guess intro into guitars is ok. Still doesn't replace the hours of practice with the real thing. Pretty soon they'll come out with a pedal emulator part to this game.

George Harrison originally performed the song with a solo acoustic guitar and an organ; a demo version, shorter than the officially released version, can be heard on the Anthology 3 album and in reworked form on the Love album. Eric Clapton, who was a good friend of Harrison, played lead guitar on the album version of the song with a Gibson Les Paul guitar. On The Concert for Bangladesh, he performed it on a Gibson Byrdland hollowbody guitar, and later acknowledged that a solid-body guitar would have been more appropriate.[6]

On 29 November 2002 Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Dhani Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Eric Clapton performed "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Concert for George in memory of Harrison, who died a year earlier after a long battle with cancer. This version featured Eric Clapton playing his original solo and also a second, as well as Paul McCartney on the piano.

In 2004, George Harrison was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was played in tribute by fellow inductee Prince, along with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Dhani Harrison (video).

I have a 1962 Cherry one. And if I play it through a Leslie emulator (sadly I have no real Leslie. Maybe one day). When I try butchering the leads portions of this song---I don't get the same results. At least to my ears.

I have no ADT emulator, so maybe that's the problem. Anyhow, my 335 has the original "zebra" pickups. I string standard strings (GHS Boomers) through "G-string." And use heavier strings on the three heaviest. The action of this guitar is the lightest of all my electrics. Balance and response are a joy.

much thanks! I had a feeling it was a Les Paul, posted on November 6, 2009 at 05:47:29

And Prince's lead work was truly awesome at the R&R HOF Award. For those who haven't seen/heard it:

Thanks for posting that! Great to see it again and this time I bookmarked it. The whole band is wonderful but Prince is (no surprise) incredible in it. I realy hope someone caught that Tele...

Interesting how Harrison's songs hold up so well in large ensemble versions
while retaining the beauty, intimacy and personality of his bare-bones demos. The mark of a great songwriter.

This has been asked before, but WHO is the tasty Strat player in the cap?

I'm lucky enough to have a 1957 Tele with solid maple neck (like the ones used by Prince and whomever the guy is with the Strat in the video). The action is a bit higher than the rosewood fretboards, but the radius and slim design is great. The tone of these guitars are to die for. I don't know if you play guitar, but I've had non-players handle my Tele and most tell me the feel is very natural. It's truly amazing how Leo and Gibson really nailed these designs. The look, feel, & tone. Still sought after, 50+ years later.

Spectacular - is that available on a cd? (nt), posted on November 6, 2009 at 11:01:53

Thanks so much for posting the HOF video. Full-body chill factor. It's hard to imagine that band having another notch to kick it up to, but by the time Prince is warmed up, they are right with him and feeling it too. Amazing.

... is a 2 disc bootleg called Small Club-2nd Show That Night.
It was recorded live at a private party during his 1988 tour and is a mixing desk recording.
If you have ever thought of a less likely artist to tell a "knock knock" joke I can't imagine who!
The copy I have is labelled as being on Beech Marten RECORDS, NUMBERED bm 047/2 and was made in Italy.
OK, wait over... you can download it for free at the link below.
I know NOTHING of this link so check it out first!
I only found it searching for the recording and as it says at the site "This is the infamous Small Club show that is arguably the greatest live Prince bootleg ever! It features superb sound quality, several great covers, a couple tracks unreleased at the time, and one improvised song that has never been heard before or since (People Without)!!"

Go get 'em, Larry.
Enjoy!

I am unable to find away to get them to play on my CD players. I know it is easy to do and all, it just takes me forever. It took a week of fucking around with the Basement tapes to get them converted right. Lot of tossed useless CD-Rs in the process.
It is probably something I am not going to try again as I just do not have the patience to go thru it again. I see that you can buy it on a 2 LP set...
If I was a die hard Prince fan....maybe....but I am not.
He is just another hot shit real good axe man, there are many more, lots of whom I do not boy.
Thanks for the tip, someone here will maybe find it helpful....

took forever to get it all imported and working. But that is a swell version ...no doubt. It is all in I Tunes now, but as MP3s. I'd like to get it into AIFF files but I cannot find away to do so.
When I loaded SB Center, only 2 songs showed up!!!. I am rescanning everything now to see if if finds the missing 10 songs...
Thanks for the nudge.

Larry, there are some FANTASTIC Prince after show, well recorded bootlegs where he just kicks ass on guitar.
He and his equally hot band do covers and kick out the jams on long instrumentals. I remember there being little
vocal material on these recordings and musically they are quite satisfying.

He should officially release some of this material - his "Shut Up and Play Your Guitar, You Sexy Mutherfunker".

I'll try and get a list of titles from a friend that's more familiar with the material than I am, as I would like to pursue some of it.
I'll let you know when I have more info. In the meantime maybe a Prince aficionado will chime in with some titles/sources.
