Hopefully MCA (in the case of the Buddy Holly material) keeps safety masters around, even though they are a copy.

It seems to put the onus on MCA not Hoffman. All it mentions Steve doing is obtaining the tapes for MCA.

The only other actual media article I was able to find in my Googling was the Houston Chronicle(?) interview with the leader of the Picks who did indeed receive safety copies of Holly tapes from Hoffman to do overdubs on. If this was done without MCA's permission, I could certainly see him being shitcanned over that alone.

Oh yes, and given that Capitol has licensed Pet Sounds to Audio Fidelity with Hoffman doing the mastering, I doubt there is a "missing tape" situation, unless you feel they're generously allowing him to just use the tape he's allegedly been sitting on since 1993.

There;s no missing tape on Pet Sounds. For DCC Hoffman was allowed into a room under supervision to make a copy of the tape to use for his remaster, for the AF redo, Hoffman simply used the copy of the tape he already had as well as the DAT he made while at DCC.

The only issue there is whether the "Original Master Tapes" claim is truthful.
