Mixed without EQ by Owsley who wrote a few pages on his philosophy of mixing and recording and microphone use, a fascinating read. The sound on this 1972 set is damn good, a great sound stage with stuff outside the speakers and a thick dimensional image floating in the center. The guitars just snap out of blackness & Lesh is holding the bottom in his own particular and unique style. Jerry's voice is at the stage of his career where I think he sounded his best. All in all a great package.

you know these Dead recordings should almost be required to be listened to by engineers that are working now and those getting into it.

simple is as simple does. Following are album notes
----------------------------------------
The rear cover of Dick's Picks, Vol. 36 carries the following warning;

Caveat Emptor
Dick's Picks Vol. 36 was mastered from the original 1/4" analog sonic journal tapes recorded at 7.5 ips, and were not produced with commercial intentions. However, due to the masterful skill of the recordist, these tapes sound remarkably rich and true to the live sound. Being more than thirty years old, the tapes exhibit some minor signs of the ravages of time, as we all do, but rest assured that everything possible has been done to make them sound as good as possible.

The rear cover of Dick's Picks, Vol. 1 carried a similar message and also a message briefly explaining the reason for the Dick's Picks series;

Dick's Picks differs from our From The Vault series in that we simply did not have access to complete shows (nor the modern mixing capabilities afforded by multitrack tapes) But we think the historical value and musical quality of these tapes more than compensates for any technical anomalies... In other words what you hear is what you get. And what you get ain't bad!
