I prefer Son Volt over Uncle Tupelo bandmate Jeff Tweedy's Wilco. Jay has a much more appealing and soulful voice and his lyrics are much better IMHO.
Some examples

And a solo piece

and one from Uncle Tupelo

because I feel exactly the opposite. I much prefer Jeff's vocals to Jay's. I find that Jay's vocals annoy me, to the point that I don't much like Uncle Tupelo or Son Volt. (FYI: I've tried to like Son Volt, as I have a few of their albums, and have even seen Son Volt in concert, and they were okay, but no where near as good as Wilco.)

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

;-)

PS Did you ever get to hear the last Bright Eyes album? If so, what did you think? (I liked it quite a bit, although I think the opening monologue went on a bit too long. And the guy's voice was a bit monotone as well.)

No, I have not heard it, posted on July 30, 2012 at 16:14:27

Not as good as Cassadaga, but about on par with Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. (At least IMHO.)

I went to high school with the pedal steel guitarist in Son Volt.

I'm a fan of Son Volt and Wilco and would not pick one over the other. Different sounds, different styles.

Glad they're both making great music.
