We're looking at a major remodel of a 80s home with 8 foot cottage cheese ceilings. The music/ht room can go to maybe 13' in the center down to an 8' sofit in one end for the screen.

Rather than a peak in the center and beams which look cool. one could do a sofit on the 8' portion and a 10' ceilings which is what I have now with reflectors and sounds awesome. So the big question is....

Can I do the designer and wife thing and still not compomise too much?

I have a 15' x 20' LR with vaulted clg which is now my listening room. The peak is about 13'. In spite of my compromises, it sounds pretty good to me. That said, there is also a 12 x 12 DR which opens to the back of the LR. I suspect that it is greatly influencing the sound in that there is little or no rear reflection.
I too am getting ready to build a listening room and am in the middle of research. I claim no expertise in acoustics, but offer my info based on my experience. Follow the link for a picy

My rule of acoustics is you can have Effective, Attractive, or Affordable.

Pick any two. :->)
