If you had to choose the BEST, MOST RELIABLE output emitter follower transistors to operate CLASS A, + and - 24v, what would they be???? Toshiba 2SC3421 and 2SA1358??? MJE171, MJE181??? Thanks, Ray

I was a follower of Professor Marshall Leach at Georgia Tech and in 1977 I built his discreet FET preamp that was published in Audio Magazine. I carefully matched all the transistors as to beta/hfe/d-s current). I would like to think that science and engineering has improved upon transistor manufacture since 1977. Am I wrong? I would like to think that the transistors avaliable today have fewer impurities in their silicon sandwich. Am I wrong? Are the Toshiba/Hitachi transistors better than the old National and Fairchild transistors I used in 1977? This all N output stage is now using mps8099/2n5210. I was thinking about the Toshiba 2sc3421 on heat sinks.

I have to re-cap these preamps as their electrolytics have given up the ghost. While there I was contemplating changing or upgrading the transistors also especially the Class A output stage with adding heat sinks. I have toyed with adding a 1:1 output transformer to drive balanced lines 600 ohm but that is not absolutely necessary. Thanks for any advice. Ray
