VARIAC hook up

I recently purchased this Variac at a flee market. Got it for $50 so its a good deal if it works
I would like some help in hooking it up. do not want to burn the house down
So it goes.........

 Terminal 3 is almost certainly the wiper, so it will be one of the outputs. Suggest you use a signal generator or bell transformer (10 volt output) or the 6V or 5V winding of a power transformer you have laying around as a low voltage source and safely determine the relationships among the terminals.

And remember that a variac is NOT an isolation transformer--the output still has a DC path to ground.

Unless you want the variac to go to 140vac.

For 140vac max output

 If your outlets are wired up backwards, then your fuse will blow when you hook up the variac. The hot and neutral connections matter for the variac. I learned the hard way when I hooked up a variac without checking that my outlet was wired correctly.
