Hello,

Currently I am constructing low power pc case for stereo playback, using CD player metal case as the basis. I am using micro ITX (17x17cm) motherboard with the PCI riser card pointing away from the motherboard, therefore the sound card can have its own 'space' in the case. I was wondering if it would make any sense shielding the soundcard area, e.g. separating it from the motherboard area with a copper plate, or even making it completely isolated in a copper box? I could also do the same with the PSU section of the case, dividing the case into three spaces (sound card, motherboard, psu).

Any thoughts on this?

I would say yes, go for the shielding if you can. As Fred says at least provide room for it if you don't want to implement it up front.

Another advantage of the system is by using a PCI riser card its fairly easy to use a separate linear supply for the PCI card. This has a good probability of improving the sound significantly.

I'd try out the configuration before implementing the shield. Allow for them to be fitted later. One needs to have some skills for RF shielding v magnetic shielding re power supply.

For what it is worth, I use an overlarge case for a mini itx board. This way, I can do all kinds of things to power supplies and components.
