I have been trying different rippers and reading up on what available. Found this ripper which uses Secure rip and seems to be much line EAC.

If you have a favorite please share....

Thanks!

I tried the Ubuntu 9.04 deb, and I couldn't get it to work. The drive just makes a chunking noise when I try to rip, but not progress is shown. There are no error messages.

[Update: Fix here.]

I had been using abcde (which uses cdparanoia by default) with the -X switch passed in (which tells cdparanoia to not accept any errors). I found this just too slow, so I've been trying icedax lately. It's extremely fast, but there's just no indication when a rip is bad except for explicit errors. I've been seeing some inconsistencies in a few rips (out of many dozens).

[Update: looking at rubyrip, I can just as well mock up my own primitive "secure rip" feature for icedax by ripping each track twice and comparing checksums. It will still be much faster than rubyrip and will give me some basic peace of mind.]

One thing I like about icedax is that it has built in de-emphasis, and claims to be able to detect pre-emphasis that's in the subchannel data but not in the TOC. I estimate about 2% of my CDs have pre-emphasis (one common CD with pre-emphasis is the DDD Glen Gould Goldbergs.)

I just found a Debian package for that! Thanks, I'll give it a try.

By the way, is that a passive or active ripper? ;)
