You know what's kind of like online digital distribution, and yet not at all like that? Selling the entire re-mastered Beatles catalog on a USB drive that slots into a fake apple. The fine folks at Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music have teamed up to build a limited edition run of 30,000 USB apples to be sold on December 7 in the UK and December 8 in freedom-loving America. Included on the 16GB drive are the 14 stereo titles in FLAC 44.1 Khz 24-bit, in addition to 320 Kbps MP3s and a whole digital stack of special materials like liner notes and mini-documentary films, all for the low, low price of $279.99. The drive is up for pre-order as of now, which means you could be a mere month away from plugging this drive into your computer, dragging the files into your iTunes library and then pretending that you bought them online in some sort of forward-looking content distribution model.

But not the mono versions, and not 96 kHz...

The interesting thing is that iTunes won't play FLAC. So what do you bet that Apple has a new release of iTunes to play FLAC? But then what about all of the iPods that won't play FLAC? Will they offer new firmware updates to decode FLAC files?

Things are changing. EMI is eroding Apple's grasp on things.....

I know that the people on this forum won't have problems. It's the other 99% of the iPod owners who are going to have problems.

"But not the mono versions, and not 96 kHz..."

Heck, because it was digitally mastered at 192 kHz, even 48 kHz would have been a much better option than 44.1 kHz.......... (24 bits IMO is overkill..... I doubt 20 bits would sound any different..... )

If the Mono set came out in 48 or 96 kHz, I'd probably jump in........

The chances are about the same an them open-souring their OS or allowing it to be installed on non-Mac hardware.

Well, then this is a big "Fuck you!" from EMI to Apple...

A typical Mac user won't have any idea how to play a FLAC file on his machine, so he will be stuck listening to 320 kbs MP3's.

It's always interesting to sit on the sidelines and watch two giants battle it out. There's always a winner and a loser. These guy are playing for keeps and there's a *lot* of money at stake...

Open standards can be a very powerful thing.

I find it odd that anyone serious about music uses iTunes at all, but I then again I understand that you if you sell DACs to the computer-challenged, you have to compromise.

Why do you find it odd?

I am "serious" about music, and use iTunes. I rip to itunes, and then my squeezebox plays it. Easy. And I'm a software developer by the way, so not computer challenged in the slightest.
Cheers,
Paul.

It has nothing to do with who buys or doesn't buy the products we make. It has to do with the people who buy iPods, which is something like 80% of the entire portable player market. I would bet that at least 90% of all iPod users use iTunes, whether they have PC's or Macs. The people on this forum generally won't have a problem figuring out how to play FLAC's, but the average user with iTunes won't have a chance in hell. If you are a Mac user, there are virtually no other choices for music players besides iTunes. Songbird won't even rip CD's. Like I said, it's a big "Fuck you!" from EMI to Apple.
