cPlay

The open source high-end audio player using ASIO

May 2008

cPlay delivers high quality audio playback using ASIO 2. Playback is achieved using any ASIO compatible soundcard. cPlay is a minimalist audio player using the latest high quality SRC resampler (Best Sinc SNR 145.68db or 121.33db) or SoX (VHQ or HQ). cPlay's design offers state-of-the-art ASIO-only playback and caters for touch screen users. Installation, setup and use is easy. cPlay is built in c/c++ and operates on Windows XP SP2 Professional (32 bit).

FEATURES

  1. Resampling is sourced from LibSampleRate (version 0.1.5) and SoX 14.2.0 under GNU GPL license. LibSampleRate is aka SRC (Secret Rabbit Code) and supersedes the version as used in foobar2000. Best Sinc converter now offers a SNR of 145.68db or 121.33db (versus 97db). SoX VHQ offers better than 170db SNR. Resampling is bypassed when input rate matches output.

  2. Supports Steinberg's excellent ASIO 2 and is backward compatible to prior ASIO versions (as required by ASIO drivers).

  3. Offers high quality 64 bit double precision digital volume control (in 0.5db steps). This can be bypassed.

  4. Playback is achieved through .cue, .wav or .flac files. cPlay loads entire .wav or .flac (decoded) into RAM before starting. Playback is done directly from cPlay's internal buffer. Cue playback requires .cue files as created by EAC (single or multi file standard).

  5. Ensures efficient CPU resource utilization allowing for low specification processors or high levels of upsampling. This means CPUs can be underclocked / undervolted.

  6. Supports up to 3 ASIO soundcards with each having up to 100 output channels.

  7. Advanced optimizations are applied (if available from ASIO driver) during playback.

  8. Best results achieved when using cMP (i.e. cMP˛). This allows for low level Windows optimizations. Use cMP release 1.0 final or later as this allows for bypassing RAM load in cMP (set RAM Load in cMP Settings to No) otherwise wav file is RAM loaded twice. cPlay allows for both svchost and lsass to be suspended during playback thus reducing the Windows footprint. Only exception is EMU's ASIO driver which requires both (svchost and lsass) to be operational. Set cMP's Optimize setting to Critical.

  9. Full remote control is achieved with cMP: offering volume control, track navigation, next/previous and stop/eject via (wireless) mouse.

USER MANUAL

Visit cMP˛ website (http://www.cicsMemoryPlayer.com) for more details and setup.

Screen Shot

GETTING STARTED

Download cPlay's installer here (1.3MB). Installation and startup is straight forward.

If you don't have an ASIO compatible soundcard, use ASIO4ALL. Note that ASIO4ALL does not support channel mapping (use default) and rarely handles above 48k sample rate.

Your feedback will help guide cPlay's future development. Source code (4.1MB) is available via email.

Ok I finally found the 3 files I missed 1st time through. It sounds better with remaining files deleted. More transparency in mids/highs. Purer sound is the best way to describe it. Definitely a keeper.

Dave I don't know how to respond to your post. I went through the link you provided but there is lot there I don't understand, Will study some more.

Hi Serge

I'm working through your new hit list of files to disable, and I discovered MSACM.DLL & MSACM32.DLL in my system32 folder... but no instruction from you to deal with them.

Is this something you tried already, or another two candidates for exclusion ?

BTW, thank you so much for starting us down this road of improvement !

Cheers,
Grant

LATER ON: haw-haw... answered my own question. In my system, Windows complains on bootup without MSACM32.DLL (the other one seems of no consequence, so I left it disabled)

EARLY LISTENING: I agree with other posters here - nice uplift to SQ in my room too. Excellent results from your research Serge ! Can there be any more left to uncover ???

That's not a Toy... IT'S A TOOL !!

I discovered MSACM.DLL & MSACM32.DLL in my system32 folder . . .

As Serge noted, "Also there are two DRM descramblers, that I don't know how to remove yet".

If he means (as I'm sure he does) MSACM.DLL & MSACM32.DLL, neither do I. If you do delete them, Windows will almost certainly fail on boot - the Internet is awash with scary warnings about this. (Ever curious, I renamed msacm.dll and couldn't access my headless box on restart. I switched it back and all was OK.)

Just for the record, I've now deleted the listed files on two cMP^2 boxes and, yes, the SQ improvement is very marked in both cases. This is a VERY worthwhile "tweak". Good work, Serge!

Edit: On my cMP^2 systems, the "Search" function doesn't work because something or other is missing. If you get the same, open a Command Prompt window in \system32 and type Dir audiosrv.dll /s to find all instances of audiosrv.dll (/s searches sub-folders) then delete them. Repeat this for each file - very quick.

Ok Dave please do share which 'file deletes' you did successfully. I have read the link several times and conclude I cannot do any of these w/o some assistance.

I did pretty much the whole caboodle except for Chapter 2 which covers the files that perform XP Services you don't use. I hit problems with that bit and have yet to go back to it. The rest was fine.

As I say, I was aiming only to reduce the installed size of the OS - the SQ change was unexpected and not IMHO as marked as that obtained from "steppe 2". But still worth doing.

Just sit with the instructions in front of you and delete the stuff it tells you to using a bit of common sense as to what to skip.

It's not exciting - but it's not difficult either. Just be sure to proceed slowly and make regular tested backups (so you don't have to go back to Square One when you mess up).

even on my office computer where nothing has been removed from WINDOWS, SEARCH will only find the basic files where COMMAND PROMPT finds the "other" files.

Whether this makes any difference sonically I cannot say since I just discovered this new tweak today. Can't wait to get home and give it a try.

Serge/STEPPE is the man of the season on the FORUM this summer of 2011.

Thanks for letting us know the results of your inquisitive mind!!!

I do not think I am hearing much different in the high frequencies.

Very worthwhile improvement. Subtle initially but the longer you listen the more you appreciate what it does.

Thanks very much, Serge,

Hi steppe,

Thanks again for another great tweak.

I am also 16-44, but use ASIO4ALL and Windows XP Home Edition.

I removed:

from Windows\System32: msadp32.acm, msaud32.acm, and sound.drv (yes, lower case)

from Windows\System32\dllcache: msacm32.drv, and dmband.dll, sound.drv (yes, again)

and from Windows\System32\Drivers: MSKSSRV.sys

The improvement is systemic and therefore difficult to describe. But the sound is more precise and I am able to listen into the music more. The high is less shrill. Detail more apparent.

Thanks again.

Could it have been removed earlier somehow? Some previous tweak?

Thanks,

Dave,

Very interesting link. I'm warming to the idea of taking Windows down another notch or two... Serge showed the first Steppe (PI), this looks like a good 'nuther hundred steps or so.

I take it from your comments you made the changes manually. In the interest of saving time (a commodity I don't have a lot to spare right now), I'm thinking the easiest way to do this is to:

1. "Donate" for his batch files.

2. Go through the batch files with the guide & comment out the deletes that look like they'll stop my cMP from running.

3. Apply them on a test HDD. Then see if it runs still.

4. If no-runnie, back to #2 and repeat as needed. If it runs, copy the system to the SDD & give it a listen.

I didn't see any cautions about using his batch files after a quick 'Google'. Any thoughts?

Greg in Mississippi

P.S. Serge, thanks for doing all this research and sharing your findings. After getting into the cMP groove a few years back, I've gained the opinion that the more un-needed processing (software or hardware) you cut out of the system, the better it will sound. As a matter of course, I removed the codecs when setting up my cMP when doing "Step 3 – disable unused hardware" & "Step 4 – disable unused audio functions" under the Soundcard setup section. But I never listened to see if that made a difference. Now I know it does! You, Mark, and Dave are doing great things to extend our cMP setup knowledge!
Everything matters!

I'm warming to the idea of taking Windows down another notch or two.

Me too. Many thanks for your interest.

The first point I'd make is (a) that what I call "steppe 2" (Serge's codec deletions) makes a significant difference to SQ - it jumps at you - and (b) that "a leech on a mermaid's ass" just has to be the Metaphor of the Year!

The second is that I'm not suggesting that "slimming" Win XP makes for anything like such a marked a difference. I'm wondering if it's not my imagination. It needs more testing. I reported a SQ improvement the first time I tried it - and there certainly was one in my system - but I'm not now absolutely sure it was "the slimming wot done it". This is partly because I can't readily think of a reason why it should and explains why I'm hoping others will try it.

"Donate" for his batch files.

I've been working my way through the ten "Chapters" of the web site and writing my own batch files to do the various deletions. I certainly don't grudge the chap his $15 - if this works out we should IMHO pay him both verbal and more useful tribute - but it soon became clear to me that the scenario he was designing for and the cMP setup are very different and that what he generally recommends and what would work for us are not the same. There is, e.g., a fair bit that he urges his readers to keep that I've deleted without problems and vice versa.

I've had some interesting side effects. As you know, I use a headless setup and for a long while had an odd bug whereby some (though not all) flac-format data (though not wav) would, if running with AWE enabled while pulling data over a LAN, cause certain albums to freeze on launch. It seems (though it might not seem so in the morning) that this irritating bug has been cured because of the files I've deleted. Time will tell but what pleases me is that the system is definitely more responsive than it was. I have no idea why.

Another odd effect is that I now think that playing with AWE enabled is less pleasant to listen to than playing with it off. It's certainly different and I'm not sure which I prefer.

Apply them on a test HDD. Then see if it runs still.

Already done! I've worked my through the text on the web site chapter by chapter to create files that do nearly all the proposed deletions while omitting those that gut feel suggested I shouldn't, at least on a first pass. It was teeeeeedious.

If no-runnie, back to #2 and repeat as needed. If it runs, copy the system to the SDD & give it a listen.

I tested both boot and play at regular intervals as I assembled the batch files. As it goes, this was easy to do with a headless setup as I'd write the file on a desktop then run it on the target without having to boot the latter into XP Mode. I'd just launch Explorer from the cMP GUI, locate and run the batch file, re-boot (to be sure it would still boot) and test play. I reckon I've now done about 90 per cent of the chap's suggestions and have yet to have a lockout. So far, all-runnie. It won't last.

So, if you can bear with me for a day or so while I complete and test the files, I'll happily pass them on to anyone who asks for them c/w some rough and ready notes, screenshots, the usual disclaimers and so on.

As of now, I've taken the OS partition down from something just over 1 GB to under 400 MB (making it feasible to boot from a 1GB SD c/w SATA adapter), fixed my flac bug and possibly (though not definitely) improved cMP^2's SQ.

+++

In short, it's a case of "what are you doing but lure people into time consuming and sometimes useless software ''so called ops' ' w/o thinking and trial?" Shame on you, DR.

I can't find Hdaudio.sys neither.

However I discovered, after numerous reboots and by the process of elimination, Hdaudbus.sys is the only file out of steppe's list that I need. Without it, there was no sound. I think this might have to do with the fact that I am an ASIO4ALL user.

Thanks again steppe for a most significant tweak. There is so much improvement in the middle range that the human voice is now much more realistic.

You preface with "IT IS ASUMED, that you have already removed all the audio codecs and Windows file protection" but I am unaware of a way to do the latter in sp3. You have many responses but no one asks about this so maybe I am missing something widely known. How do you disable or remove windows file protection when using XP Pro sp3?

And the rest of us could well have it wrong but I suspect that Serge was just being circumspect (which, in this milieu, is welcome).

Whatever, if you have successfully implemented the minlogon change, you have (SP2 or SP3) "removed" WFP. If you haven't, do as you're told at the link - it's the same palaver with either SP and well worth the slight effort in both cases.

Part 1 (removing audio codecs in DevManager) is also trivial to do but IME equally worthwhile.

XPlite and the manual procedure that it automates are only for sp2 not 3. I used the method via safe mode that does not need wfp disabled to install minlogon.

So I am still looking for a way to follow Steppe's 2 with sp3. I have already dont step 1.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that that was the case. But I don't see why you can't just locate and move/delete the files regardless using Explorer and/or the DOS prompt. After all, that's how we get rid of winlogon.exe in the first place . . .

If WFP is off (regardless of how you do it) and the backup files are removed from the dll cache, I don't see your problem. Sorry if I'm being dumb.

Doing minlogon setup one substitutes one winlogon file for another--so wfp is 'fooled'. Here one removes files without substituting. I did not think that in this case files would be removed from the caches. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me that it would work this way because if wfp reformulates what files to maintain at each startup how does it know to replace missing files? That is, I would expect it to replace what I removed rather than eliminate what I removed from caches. Do you KNOW otherwise from experience?

Yes, of course. That's why you have to delete any backup file from the cache as well as the working one from \system32.

Hence my earlier suggestion that you use the /s switch with the DIR command - you see where every copy of the file is located. As both \drivers and \dllcache are sub-folders of \system32, it's easy.

Do you KNOW otherwise from experience?

Well, yes, I think so (he said, blinking in the glare of the bright lamp shining in his eyes). OTOH, I can't see the roof falling in if you just give it a try. It's mostly how I got my experience, such as it is.

As ever, be sure to have to hand an up-to-date backup of the OS partition before you do anything like this.

I do not remember hearing that WFP could not be removed from SP3 XP. I could have missed it.

I have gone back to check and the files are still "gone".

Not responding to RYELANDS, thought it best to put my comment in the next logical spot.

Oh, I took your recommendation to mean that wfp would remove the files from the caches if I removed them from \system32 while it was off. I will try to remove them from all places in safe mode and restart and see what happens. I still wonder why wfp wouldn't call foul in that case causing error or startup failure: does it really only know which files to maintain by what is in the cache and not from some standard list it references?

And the bright light in your eyes is to help you listen objectively, i.e., double-blind.

So do I. BTW, I see that litepc.com claims that XPLite "Supports . . . all XP service packs including SP3!"

does it really only know which files to maintain by what is in the cache

No idea. Why not ensure you have (and can use) an OS backup and just give it a go?

Best

at least on my cMP2 installation.

I have removed all the files Steppe listed except the duplicates in .cab files which I don't know how to cut from the .cab. The system only allows extraction of these which I believe leaves the driver in the cab and just allows a copy to be made. What I don't know yet is whether wfp can only replace these or also ones that were only in \system32 but not in a cache (at least that showed on a search).

I do believe I hear an improvement right off, but I need more listening as I first put on a great 24/192 album that sounds super no matter what.

Hello, everybody. First let me thank Mr. Mihaylov for pointing out that hdaudio.* files come from Realtek driver pack, so you may possibly not have these files on your system. Also thank you all for encouragement. Folks with asio4all! Take care, I didn’t test these tweaks, but I don’t expect trouble. Just reboot and check more often. ALSO! DO EVERYTHING - the result is very good. When checking after rebooting you don’t have to start cmp every time. If cplay works, it is OK - just click on any *.cue file.
Here is another, and much longer, list of files to remove. As usual, it is assumed, that you have already removed previous 16 or so files, had disabled WFP, disabled or removed all the codeks. For those folks who retained Microsoft PCM converter, I strongly suggest to remove it . It is one of the dirtiest things. Also take a note, that I don’t use my cmp for ripping, don’t have a cd drive in it and have no Internet or any network connection. I transfer ripped music with a flash drive.
A WORD OF WARNING: NEVER TOUCH ksecdd.sys. The system will not boot until you put it back.
Now, if somebody starts experimenting with removing other files or programs, let others know of dangerous files and results. Somebody, please, take trouble to make a list of never-to-touch files!
The files to remove come in a more or less alphabetical order. Most have doubles in dllcache.
The list #2 (most are *dll files, unless specified otherwise). Most are from System32 and Dllcache, doubles are in Dllcache and sometimes in Drivers folders. Some files give immediate and strong effect, removing others GIVE cumulative effect. Note that some files have same names but different extensions (suffixes? Like *.dll and *.sys, or *.drv)
dmloader.dll, dmmime.dll, dmscript.dll, dmsynth.dll, dmusic.dll, dplay.dll, dplayx.dll, dpmodemx.dll, dmstyle.dll, dpnaddr.dll, dpnet.dll, dpnhpast.dll, dpnhupnp.dll, dpnlobby.dll, dpnmodem.dll, dpwsock.dll, dpserial.dll, dpvacm.dll, dpvoice.dll, dpvox.dll, dpwsock.dll, dpwsockx.dll, dsdmo.dll, dsdmoprp.dll, dsound3d.dll, dsound.dll, dxmasf.dll, h323cc.dll, h323msp.dll, hdaprop.dll, HdAudRes.dll, (these 2 are probably also from Realtek), jgaw400.dll, jgmd400.dll, laprxy.dll, ksuser.dll, mciwave.dll, mciseq.dll, mcicda.dll, midimap.dll, mll_hp.dll, mmdrv.dll, mmulse.dll, mspmsnsv.dll, mspmsp.dll,mssap.dll, msscp.dll, mstime.dll, rdpsnd.dll, sbeio.dll, serwvdrv.dll, strmdll.dll, usrvoica.dll, usrvpa.dll, wmvcore.dll, wmstream.dll, wavemsp.dll, wmamod.dll, wmadmoe.dll,wmasf.dll, wmdmlog.dll, wmdmps.dll, wmerrenu.dll, wmerror.dll, wmidx.dll.
AFTER REMOVING THE ABOVE FILES to TMP or any other folder, REMOVE THE FOLLOWING
BE CAREFULL AND REBOOT AFTER 5-8 files, listen to the changes, but don’t jump at conclusions and DON’T STOP (as usually, some files have doubles)
These come mostly from Drivers folder and some have a very strong effect:
amstream.dll, cewmdm.dll, kmixer.sys, redbook.sys, cdaudio.sys, swmidi.sys, sysaudio.sys, stream.sys, wdmaud.sys, splitter.sys, cinemst2.sys, tosdvd.sys, tsbvcap.sys, vdmindvd.sys, wmiprop.dll, wmnetmgr.dll, ksproxy.ax, iac25_32.ax, wdmaud.drv
AFTER PERFORMING the abovementioned tweaks DO THE SIMPLIEST THING : Cut the Windows Media Player folder (It starts to howl, but don’t be scared!) from Windows folder and paste in TMP folder or whatever folder You are using. Reboot. Have fun! Please tell us of Your experience.
Serge.
P.S. Folks! I don’t insist on the order of things, but that is how I've done it. No trouble whatsoever - the system is stable and playing for 3 days brilliantly, with air and ease we have never had in cmp before. Somebody mentioned, that the mids came slightly over the board, they will settle. The backyard will be swept almost totally clean. The same about the attic. Overall sound quality will be up several steps. Funny, but it needs a breaking time of appr. 15-20 minutes. How it can be with software is beyond me.

ok Serge very exciting changes but I ran into some difficulties. I got through the 1st list rebooted and listened a very nice sq pop...more air smoother sounds a little louder. I got through the 2nd list (not counting windows media player) and again great sound. Then my system became unstable and gave me a terrible sound. So I shut it off rebooted and it would not boot so I jumpered the terminals next to battery and rebooted but when I was back in I found a whole bunch more stuff on my irq list (which I always goto to uninstall stuff from the irq like unused usb ports). Anyway I dont have the time to get back in now and I don't know if I have to raise the clock spd or vcore to get more stable (currently @ 133 host clock control and .944 vcore). So great sound but I have to work through a few things 1st. Oh also some files I could not find, some were off by one letter or so...maybe a typo.

I wonder what it is for.

The dll cache is the place from which WFP takes a replacement file in the event of one of its brood being corrupted. With WFP disabled, it has no role. I've no idea why you don't have the folder but, as it can safely be deleted once WFP is off, I wouldn't toss and turn through a sleepless night worrying about it.

+++
Edit: You do have the folder. I miss-read your note - sorry. Now go back to sleep.
+++

No two Windoze installations are ever going to have the same file library. If this or that (or even these or those) files are present on Machine A but not Machine B, again, don't worry about it. At least three quarters of the files on Serge's list are not on my machine as I've been doing a similar purge though not as thorough and for a different purpose.

Whatever, he has passed on a list of files that he was able to remove and get better sound as a result. If you want to do the same, remember that what works for him might not work for you and that, while it might be safe to delete them, their absence may well make no difference to your setup. On the other hand, you won't miss them.

The mantra is "Go carefully and backup regularly". It's not a bad idea to make notes of what you delete as you go along.

Hey Rye,

Wow, an inmate who actually reads and re-reads posts they are responding to. Dont make a habit of that or you will not be welcomed here :).

Before I go back to sleep, I remember on my last cmp2 build that I was using the directions off the cicsmemoryplayer.com site and there was a step missing that I remembered doing.

In the Autoruns section there is no mention of deleting the kmixer, dmusic, etc. Though on the directions that you gave me years ago, there is a whole section on that.

Was this an oversite when the site was built, or a change to the "recipe"?

I did the steps and cant see why they wouldnt be a good thing to do. Perhaps some inmates are missing out?

Good point. I suspect it was an error, probably mine way back when I edited the copy a couple of years ago. What we can do to correct it now, I don't know as it's out of my hands.

Do you still have a copy of those "directions"? If so, any chance you could send them to me?

When I reloaded a bios it apparently reset everything to pre optimization levels. To not take chanches I used snapshot to reload Windows too (thank you Dave). Anyway don't know what happened. I'll now try to figure out what I did wrong.

Serge,

You are the keeper of the cMP flame for the moment! We can only hope you come up with more.

Wish I had the time and ability to do what you have done. Since I don't I can only thank you sincerely for your efforts. Based on previous posts I have no doubts this, too, will become part of what I call the cMP canon. All of your recommendations I feel sure will be incorporated into cics's recomendations when he gets a chance to amend his site.

Thanks very much for moving this project forward,

Rick McInnis

Using the search function with my office computer for a few of these "items to eliminate", on this machine (which likely has little to do with what I will see with the cMP machine) I see lots of versions of these files. Should one eliminate all variants of these files or only those in WINDOWS or only those in WINDOWS\system32?

Thanks, again,

Hi Serge!
Maybe you still tell us what is configuration of your music computer - the motherboard, processor, sound card, and have You done all the BIOS settings and system optimizations according to cMP2?
The files ksuser.dll, stream.sys, ksproxy.ax, wdmaud.drv that you offer to remove are used by the driver of Juli. So why remove them?

Serge.

Yikes!!

I looked on the current pc and did not find any such doc. Then I looked through e-mail and besides remembering some of the great ones I found every attachment you sent but that one.

1st off any ideas what it would be called??

I do remember a time when my computer died and I rushed my cmp2 rig into service. There was a lapse I think where some e-mails might not have made it from one computer to the other. The wife has taken time off to be with me this week so give me some time to figure it all out and see if I can find it.

I find the doc I have better than the printouts from the site.

Anyhow I'll just e-mail you when I have a solid answer but you know how long those religious services last...

Oh, and one of those e-mails talked about having higher latency on the fit pc, but better sound, concluding that the dpc latency checker is an indicator of OS slimming but not necessarily quality. I wish I had read that last week. My headphone cmp2 has been plagued with high latency 700 or higher no matter what I do. It does sound pretty good though. I think it is a bad mobo so i ordered a new one. Headphones blow so if I can not spend money on it that would be a good thing...

Hi Serge,

Thanks for the detail work.

I had taken 2 steps to execute the process.

1. Remove everything in your first paragraph, except ksuser.dll, which had to be reinstall after cPlay complained with an error message (I am an ASIO4ALL user).

2. Everything else.

After step 1, the SQ is improved further along the line of your previous post. The gravity of the mid-range is most noticeable.

After step 2, there is a shift in balance to the top. Yes, there is a general clean up of everything, but the lower-mid is lighter. I had to turn up the bass woofer just so lightly. Will listen more.

However, I have one problem: just how do you remove the Microsoft PCM Converter? The usually route of the Control Panel>Audio Device>Hardware>Codec doesn't allow me to remove it. So how do you do it?

Thanks again for the great effort.
KC

There are several folks who gather here that when I see/read their new posts it gets my audiophile pulse jumping. Included in the 1st tier of impact posters are: Cics, Dave (ryelands), Mark (hfavandepas), Gstew, Jackwong and I'm sure others I can't think of right now. Serge you have now entered this 1st tier. What a wonderful result this is. The air the smoothness is just great. Way to go!!!

Few other comments:

..Several files listed in your original post differed by one letter in my Sytem32 folder. They are: dpwsock.dll and dpvox.dll. Are these typos?

..Also since my experience yesterday I have become very sensitive to stuff my juli@ uses like wdmaud.drv but is wdmaud.sys required for the driver to work? I left wdmaud.sys in tact but if anybody knows I would appreciate an answer.

...Several files were not found: dmmine.dll, hdaprop, hdaudres.dll, mmulse.dll. I'm sure you are right about the Realtek comments.

I agree with your sonics assessment but did you eliminate Windows Media Player? When I deleted this it brought back much of the lower mids/bass.

Do you have any idea just what is happening from these deletions?

Is this dismantling the controversial kmixer?

Just wondered if there was a motive other than eliminating useless files to these instructions; did you start with a plan to eliminate something in particular?

Thanks, again,

Hi theob,

Yes, I had eliminated Windows Media Player (move the Windows Media Player folder from Programs directory to TMP).

Since yesterday, I had switched the cPlay buffer from 'Tiny' to 'Small'. That seems to have restored the mid-range, top-bass gravity.

Will listen more.

How does one do this?

Checked as many old posts as my patience would allow and saw nothing.

I doubt I am the only one wondering about this!

Thanks,

Yes, but not the 20 minutes that steppe indicated, but something like a few hours. May be loud music is also needed, mine happened during Beatles 'White Album', played LOUD.

Before burn-in, no bass, little dynamic, and a recess sound stage. Everything changes after burn-in.

I am now back to 'Tiny' buffer.

I did all the removals except items in \windows\drivers\drivers.cab. I don't have a \system32\dllcache folder. I don't know how to remove individual items from a .cab leaving the rest intact. I believe if I leave wfp off that doesn't matter. Someone tell me if I have that wrong.

Issues: I got an error window starting cMP saying it couldn't initialize something because msacm32.dll was missing. Closing that cMP came up anyway. I found, though, that I could not use notepad.exe 9to edit cuesheets) due to this being missing. I put it back and all was fine, except...

For those with Weiss DACs: my installation bluescreened soon after starting until I restarted with the firewire cable to the dac unplugged and then reinstalled the Weiss driver. Obviously one or more items removed are essential for these dacs. Its probably among the ones starting with midi.. I haven't traced it out yet, but reinstalling makes that unnecessary.

I finally got XPlite to work after yet another try a couple days later. I can't explain why it worked then when it wouldn't on several tries before. Fortunately, I didn't have to attempt that long method in the link posted.

Let me recommend to all an album that sounds just great with the new improvements. Schorry and Carroll's Percussion in Hifi 24/192 version from highdefinitiontapetransfers.com. Not great music but fun and wow sound.

stream.sys was on Serge's "third" list but is not on your list. Is this to be added to the list of files JULI@ needs?

As I mentioned, I am using JULI@ and deleted all of the files. All seems to be well. Should I replace the files you recommended not be deleted?

I have figured that if it works it is OK in the digital world and if the files in question were needed my system would not work at all.

But I know nothing, really, about this stuff and would welcome advice as to whether I should replace.

THANKS,

I initially deleted all the files and it worked for a brief time. Then I ran into trouble. Then I put the juli@ files back in and all was well. In this thread steppe gave a 'how to' find what files your soundcard uses.

You don't have to touch files from the cabs. They are not extracted, thereforem- harmless.

for posting them. I was going to do it on tuesday-wednesday, after enough time passed to make sure the system is totally stable. There are more very aggressive tweaks also, but more on that later. Especially shrewd of you was to find splitter - the file that breaks wavs into chunks to feed to kernel streaming. Don't know if it was dictated by the times when computers had less memory on board. also attached to it is a datime file which is attempting to attach a clock of its own to any media file.
Please, if you have time take a look at windows time service. What else can be removed.
Serge.

Thanks, What I don't understand is how wfp if on would restore all the items I removed if they had only been present once in system32 or for only a few there plus a cab but nowhere else. I have no dllcache or other store of them to restore from that I can identify.

which is what has me puzzled.

I guess I could try putting them back and see if it makes any difference.

So far, completely stable and sounds quite good to me. Running continuously since the recommendations were posted.

One would think if JULI@ needed the files in question it would not work at all?

I removed all the listed dll & sys files from the system32 & drivers folder. Restarted the computer & was impressed at the improvement. You have mentioned removing the Microsoft PCM converter. How do I do that?? But i feel that the wdmaud.drv & SOUND files need to remain untouched, to maintain tonal balance...
Also u had mentioned deleting certain entries from the Hkey local machine & Hkey current users in the Registry. I would love to implement that as well. If u could be a little more specefic of which of the keys to be removed from the list. Thanks. And once again, we all appreciate your contribution towards this. Truly awesome....

Hi all
first a lot of thanks to Steppe and Mihaylov for the great job done.
I've tried and results seems to me very good at the first listening.
I've checked Essence's driver and none is on the Mihaylov's list.
So I've removed all files of this clear list(.dll,.drv,.sys) and the whole system works well, but I see a lot of boring alerts about the absence of msacm32.drv.
Window alert is opened but OS works well, just a click and alert disappares so I cannot decide if reinstall this file or not. I'll try to test SQ with or without it.
Mihaylov's list is perfect for Asus Xonar Essence soundcard too, this is important and safe.
Why Steppe's list forsees a greater number of files to remove?

The only file from the above mentioned lists which is used by Juli@ seems to be the wdmaud.drv. This was the only file (according to Me), that needed to be left untouched for Juli@ to work. Since all other files have been deleted, including 'ksuser.dll', & Juli@ continues to work without reporting an error, does it effect the sound in any way??
Has anyone succeeded in removing the Microsoft PCM converter? Im not even able to locate it in the 1st place....

Do you only use juli@ as a digital out device? Are the other juli@ files only used by juli@ analogue?

By i3 platform I meant all associated hw. But I still dont understand why even a new mobo would allow juli@ to work w/o some of these files. But I was asking to see if I could delete some more files. Since I am using the old hw I'll probably not try.

I see that U r reluctant to try :) I guess u have nothing to lose though. It's not a system file. Delete it & see. If Juli@ does not work, put it back from where u removed it. I mean cut the file from the directory & paste it on Ur desktop, so that u can put it back if circumstances need u to ....

Did u manage to do the file deletions as suggested by Serge? What effect did u perceive in terms of tonality?? I recently made linear supplies for Julia & P4 using Elna Silmic 2 caps. The burn-in has crossed 100 hours & still the sound varies drastically each day

Hi all!
I deleted files which are used (can be used?) by Juli's driver: stream.sys, wdmaud.drv, ksuser.dll, ksproxy.ax.
All while works stably. I use only digital part of Juli and motherboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H with Intel Core i3-530.
The files stream.sys, ksuser.dll, ksproxy.ax are the part of DirectX file package (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX) and they are not necessary for playback with Juli in ASIO mode as however and remaining files DirectX(imho) which I deleted too (except the file dxapi.sys without which system does not start and the file wsock32.dll without which Everest does not start). But I use cMP2 as streaming player w/o mouse, monitor and keyboards.
The file wdmaud.drv probably is used for audio Windows and it is not required for sound output with Juli in ASIO mode too.
Here the list of deleted files from folder system32:

The files ks.sys, MSPCLOCK.sys, MSPQM.sys, swenum.sys are in the folder Drivers on screenshot (also removed).

Now to get to that list! (thought I had got off easy with the folder deletion. Oh, well ...)

THANKS!

when I was using a wireless mouse I had problems.

A sloppy mis-click could result in having to re-boot.

Since doing away with it I have NEVER had to re-boot unless I wanted to.

I wonder if one is better off without the wireless mouse?

I have found I much prefer having the keyboard with an USB extension cord.

Are these new files you have found to be sq opportunities if deleted? Are they recommended for those of us with the old E7200 based system?

Exactly !! U r correct. I am facing such issues with the cordless mouse as well. I dint know it's been an issue with other users as well. So u mean instead we use a corded USB mouse with an extension cable right?? With the cordless mouse, a sloppy mis-click always results in an error reporting "Asio driver not installed" or initialised or something like that, & the only option left would be to re-boot using the restart button on the cMP...

If i delete ALL the files which you have mentioned (which ofcourse i would love to), & use a wired usb mouse, will it be alright?? I do not use the Zalman case so i have to use a Monitor. Does the list of deleted files in ur post effect the working of the mouse & monitor? If not, i would rightaway go ahead & delete the whole lot...

Hello, everybody. Here is the fourth set of tweaks. It is very long and the changes in SQ are profound. Some of the proposed things may sound scary but they are not. The system is totally stable after 72 hours with a dozen reboots, file copying and so on. It plays very much better. As usually it is assumed, that you have no network, removed Windows Media Player folder and don’t watch videos on cmp computer, no modems and the stuff. The tweaks were NOT tested on Asio4all, so be wary.
1. Files to remove (there may be repetitions from part 3) from System, System32, Drivers, Dllcache folders:
Amstream.dll, cewmdm.dll, splitter.sys, swmidi.sys, sysaudio.sys, cinemst2.sys, mspqm.sys, tosdvd.sys, tsbvcap.sys, vdmindvd.sys, gm.sys, cpqdap01.sys, sonydcam.sys, msvfw32.dll, msvidc32.dll, msvidctl.dll, msvideo.dll, msyuv.dll, wmplayer.adm, browsewm.dll, cdplayer.exe.manifest, dsound.vxd, wmiprop.dll, wmnetmgr.dll, ksproxy.ax, iac25_32.ax, wdmaud.drv, dxdiag.exe, dvdupgd.exe, dpvsetup.exe, logagent.exe, amstream.dll, datime.dll, dmcompos.dll, dvsetup.exe, encdec.dll, l3codeca.acm, msg711.acm, msg723.acm, msgsm32.acm, sl_anet.acm, tssoft32.acm, drmclien.dll, dimap.dll, dimput8.dll, dinput.dll, dplaysvr.exe, dpnsvr.exe, daxctle.ocx, msdxm.ocx, actmovie.exe, dvdplay.exe, avifil32.dll, avifile.dll, avicap32.dll, avicap.dll, winhelp32.exe, winhelp.exe, hh.exe, wmsysPr9.prx, aec.sys and beep.sys (these 2 are from system32\drivers), msvideo.dll, mciavi.drv, mmtask.tsk, timer.drv. As usually, many are doubled, if any file is wanted by your soundcard, just put it back.
2. Folders to remove from Program Files and Windows completely:
Program files\common files\speech engine
Program files\common files\Microsoft Shared\ speech
Also folders from Program files : Videolan, Movie Maker, NetMeeting, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Messenger, Online Services. Yes! Yes!!!
From Windows\Media, Msagent, Help
From Windows/system32/ Macromed (all told 13 folders. Some will start yelling, don’t pay attention. If You are sorry to part with them for good, remove them to your temp folder.) Reboot. Play music.
3. Now comes the “scary” part, but the most important. If you are following the tweaks from part 1, you probably remember me mentioning registry items deleted. Here it comes again but first come words of reassurance. I did it together with my former sysadmin, and everything is well documented. Also, yes it IS dangerous to change registry values but NOT DANGEROUS to delete some items completely.
Here They are (for the beginning):
Start-Run-Regedit-press enter.
To The left of the window you will see the structure (just like a normal but deep catalog tree).
First go
Classes-Root, find wav and JUST DELETE IT by right click on your mouse
Next delete everything BDATuner (about !48 entries), next DirectSound (22 entries), next MediaPlayer and MediaPlayer1 (4 entries), WindowsMovieMaker, Mmedia, DirectPlay, Direct Sound, mplayer, wma, Microsoft Direct Music, Microsoft Direct Sound (some have many entries).
Second go Hkey-Users and open Default-Software-Microsoft. Find and delete Internet Explorer, Media Player and Windows Media, repeat it with S-1-5-18, S-1-5-19 and so on (I don’ know how many users you have)
Some entries may yell at you that they cannot be opened. That’s because you have already deleted their contents from default user. Reboot about 3 times when editing Registry. Play music. Have fun. Tell your impressions, please.
Serge.
P.S. The tweaks in the registry are only a beginning of what will come. I suggest you to get used to the idea of editing this sacred cow lightly. I have already done a lot more with registry, but that will come next time. Let your system burn in for 15-20 min.
P.P.S. I have already prepared tweaks part 5 and was in the middle of part 6 when Windows finally crashed. I don't know if I would be able to restore the registry or would have to start EVERYTHING from scratch, but I may be absent for some time. This part 4 and part 5 that I will present to you later, are perfectly safe. Just wait, please.

You are amazing. Thank you for all your work. Can't wait to get into this part 4. Here is a process I have ginned up for myself. It may be useful to others. It may be obvious but it helps me to take my time getting through the list.

1) Create a backup image of your system...just in case.

2) Print a copy of Serge's list

3) Find out which files your soundcard uses, cross them out on the printed list

4) Get into a search program. I use the default Search command in Windows. Ryelands uses Command line searches.

5) Search for each and every file & either delete or move to a temp file per Serge's recommendation.

6) Have at it.

Thanks again Serge for your efforts!

I will try more and will try to be more cautious. I am now going to try to revive my registry or will have to rebuild the cmp from scratch, a heavy duty but I know now what to avoid in the future. The tweaks I presented here are SAFE and those, that will come with part 5 are ALSO SAFE.
I don't post them now to give folks some time for their machines and systems to settle.
Serge.
