Those are two pieces that really don't do it for me anymore, but a youth orchestra might freshen them up a bit. The Birmingham acoustic is a plus, too.

I have this in my wishlist on MDT. It is scheduled for release in late January and is currently $10.76. Looking forward to it.

I haven't heard the disc but I did hear then play live last night in a broadcast from Birmingham Symphony Hall in (amongst other works) Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony. John Wilson conducting.

Heavens, they played out of their skins , what passion!

Oh, I did hear them play the Strauss and the Holst during the Proms last year via Radio 3. Admirable but not quite the VPO if you are after that Gemutlichkeit experience for the Strauss. Only to be expected. Hope I used the right word there. The Planets was even better.

Thanks for report! Good to hear about Planets, hope resounding organ, like Dutoit's from way back when. nt, posted on January 7, 2017 at 15:28:14

Yes, hope that the organ sound is like Dutoit's and that the performance isn't.
