Based on earlier comments, some folks would like more "out there" musical offerings. I hereby present two bassoon concertos by Fagerlund and Aho on a BIS SACD with Bram van Sambeek as the bassoonist and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra with Okko Kamu conducting the Fagerlund and Dima Slobodeniouk conducting the Aho. There are also two solo pieces for bassoon, one by each composer. The concertos were written in the 21st century. If you want to hear what a bassoon can really do besides the Sorcerer's Apprentice, these pieces will amaze you. And the concertos are fairly easy to get into with lots of percussion and brass. The cadenza in the Aho concerto requires the soloist to "sing" into the bassoon while playing it! The solo pieces are a little too esoteric for me, but I might give them a try again later. Great BIS sound. |
