Just heard one of the suites on internet radio played by Jian Wang on modern cello. It sounded very good. I liked the kind of slow tempi which sounded ruminative and considered. I usually opt for the original instrument historically informed bunch. I'd like a strong recommendation for each camp, modern and HIP.

TIA

I have the Jian Wang set (on DG), and I think it's excellent--and well recorded, too. It would be one of my first choices among modern sets, along with Starker's Mercury set (re-released on 3-channel SACD). For HIP, I like Bylsma's first set.

Thanks, on the way! nt, posted on November 8, 2009 at 15:32:00

The reality is that there are so many different options, particularly for a modern instrument version, that I can no longer begin to recommend one or two. I just received Thorleif Thedeen's version on BIS, only a few days after Pergamenschikow's on Hanssler, and I think that both are great - but I'm never going to be able to figure out rankings with all of my other recordings of these works. My suggestion is that you visit Amazon, and listen to some of the available snippets. Not a perfect way of assessing, but it's better than nothing - there are probably 30 versions available, and you need some way to narrow the field.

It's a little easier for HIP, where I'd recommend either Beschi or the first Bylsma recording.

Rostropovich was indeed admirable for his willingness to commission works for the cello, and managed to get a number of 20th century composers to write works for him. But why does this make him a recommendation for Bach?

Oh, Hell, of course. Sorry for the sort of duplicate post.

That was helpful.

Thanks
