.... unfortunately an awful lot is.

Venturing more into Baroque opera I have looked at some of the 2003 Paris Opera production of Rameau's last (unperformed in his lifetime) opera "Les Boreades". The modern dress is ok in this production and is relatively subdued although the weird hyperactive ballet dancing by the company La La La Human Steps is offputting. IU guess the company's name says it all.

The staging is sparce but fine and the singing very good backed up by William Christie & Les Arts Florissants so overall I would give this production a tick.

On reflection I find the worst Eurotrash are the productions that introduce extraneous and completely unecessary dress and props which are mightliy distracting for me. Althouigh I did like the BD of Handel's Julius Caesar, there seemed no point in having guns and pics of warships in the backdrop.

So each production needs examination on its merits but the trend to "modernise" (interpret as "shock") us with way out interpretations is getting a bit out of hand for me.

John

Sadly (or is it happily?) an incurable audio-video nutter with an indecent number of toys. Classical music forever!!!!

Eurotrash blah blah blah. How many more times, O Lord, how many more times? We get it,, posted on November 2, 2009 at 18:52:09

John, Lord knows we do.
The outrage.
The scorn.
The inability to admire a new perspective.

You ARE being awfully charitable! :-)

Besides, if John didn't run in to it on every other Blu-Ray (or so it seems), he wouldn't be commenting on it so often.

Maybe it looks different upside down? :-) nt, posted on November 3, 2009 at 07:38:31

But we NEED backdrops of guns and warships so that a modern audience can comprehend it! :-)
