Howdy Folks,
So I get to receive a gift from a family member and the rules are
that it should be music related + less than $200. I was thinking
of a nice box set of maybe some SACDs, piano sonatas, early music...
Has to be something that we can get easily online.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Fez

You can get several for $200!
Start with the Beethoven & Schubert sonatas by Kempff on DG. Fidelity wise they're only average by today's standards. But musically, they're unsurpassed- which is more important. Together they'll run about $100. Then finish off with the Beethoven string quartets by the Emerson quartet- with state of the art sound for about $100 on DG. Then book that trip to the desert island!

I've been splurging lately on some yummie box sets at Presto.

One I've really enjoyed (see earlier post) is the 55 CD set from DGG avalable at Presto & also at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/111-Years-Deutsche-Grammophon-Anthology/dp/B002DZX95I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1256857286&sr=1-1-spell

Probably some doubling up but great value anyway.

Good hunting & let us know what you decide upon

John

Sadly (or is it happily?) an incurable audio-video nutter with an indecent number of toys. Classical music forever!!!!

Check out: http://www.berkshirerecordoutlet.com/search.php ; I've seen SACD boxed sets from Brilliant Classics, Phillips, & Membran International. Have also seen box sets from Harmonia Mundi. You could end up with 5 or 6 sets for $200.

The Chandos box is indeed excellent.

I see that Brendel's 1990's cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas is being re-released this month at the budget price of $60. I've got that one on my shopping list.

Happy listening,

Jim

Fez,

If this is up your alley musically, the Chandos 30th anniversary set is a horn o' plenty and it's cheap for 30 discs.

I am taking it slow and easy; this will last me at least a year.
Plus, it's low enough in price compared to the $200 that you can get greedy and ask for seconds...:-)

Well, it doesn't cost $200 but the box set of Langgaard symphonies might be what I'd ask for if I didn't have it already. They are fabulous, great performances and recordings.

Looks like a very special set. The LPs put me out of range but the HDAD+ DVD's don't. I'm a sucker for big Beethoven sets.

What say ye to that?

If you want a box, then I would not go for a fairly unknown composer
like Langgaard.
For 200$ you can buy a few collections, the best box I bought in the last 2 years is the Dutch Harmonia Mundi 50th anniversary box (50cd's)
It covers a lot of music from the baroque era and the sound is mostly very good. When I bought it I paid around 60$, I see that the pricing as gone up but shop around.
If you like orchestral music, BIS has a nice collection of Sibelius orchestral works. The Beethoven symphonies on BIS SACD can be purchased for around 30$ from MDT, then from Amazon UK The 22 cd's Stravinsky box
at around 25$ incl shipping is THE bargain of the year.
I am confident that you can buy all the boxes mentioned above for less than 200$. Lot's of great music that should keep you busy for a year or more.

He is very dour and serious. I'd tread carefully here.

Langaard is not always so "dour and serious". Try the 12th symphony where the last movement is titled "Amok! A composer explodes".
