I'm in the market for some new speakers and have been considering the mc1 due to it's high waf ( fairly small, and not sitting out in the room ). But I've started to think I should also consider the mg12? Given that, what is the minimal distance from the wall the mg12 can be placed and still sound good?

Placed conventionally, like he said. Give 4 ft behind 'em, more is even better. But if you place them FACING each other (they MUST be vertical for this to work, so the stock feet are out-MyeStands or Ed Morawski's tweak-see under 'tweaks'), then you get away with 'em a foot or two away from the front wall. See Dawnrazor's posts about this in the archives.
Maybe not for everybody, but it works a trick in difficult rooms, like mine.

Maggies need air around them, as do almost any box floor-standing or stand-mounted speakers. But as panel dipole speakers the best sound requires more careful set up. Luckily, the MG12's are fairly light and can be readily moved from a positon near a wall out to a position more favorable to good sound.

With regard to placement a lot of parameters come into play that impact the sound, including, but not limited to, room size, decor, floor coverings, large areas of glass windows or mirrors, and seating position.

Having said that, as a general rule, you'll need around 3 feet or more behind the speakers to help smooth out the frequency response and create a palpable soundstage. This is not to say they won't sound nice if only 18" or 24" out, but realize they will not be performing optimumly. There should also be nothing between the plane of the speakers, like a TV or furniture, which will also compromise the soundstaging.

Finally, the amount of bass you get along with the overall frequency response is very, very much a factor of placement.

Maggies, because you can never be too thin!
