I rarely post yet frequently consult so I thought I take it to those who have taught me all that I know. Currently, I am running a Spectra 33, Mc2205, AI M3 combo using cables and interconnects for a bit of fine tuning. I am constantly pleased with what I hear, allowing me to enjoy all different sorts of music and to a degree even lesser quality recordings (I go the whole 9 yards-gypsy, punk,Monk, chanson, garage-you name it). I am well aware I could do better in terms of power-better HF extension, better LF handling,Headroom, all-around dynamics, etc-but I enjoy its smooth musicality; flute, harp, tympani, trumpets and such are all joyful sounds to behold. Additionally, with this set-up I have balanced the need for pleasurable low fatigue excessively long listening sessions with an acceptable naturalness in the sound of piano recordings. My dilemma: I find myself running into the limits of the capacity of the Mc. Trying to keep it dialed in at about 10% of its total WPC, I find this tends to keep thing as sweet as is possible with this set-up. The challenge occurs when listening large orchestra and big, involved rock music; the tunes just want a tad bit more. The Deal: I have an opportunity to get a Sonographe sa400 and am wondering if the extra 3db + the different sound characteristics+the high current design is likely provide a qualitative difference over the Mc2205? And if so, could you describe what you anticipate the difference might be? Is this simply a lateral move? Part of my thinking was that the anticipated warmth and roundness of the sa400 would match well with the neutrality of the AI M3. Looking for: Tad more headroom Touch more smooth HF presence A general better 'handling' of the 'stats Thanks Dave |
