Ribbon Tweeter Orientation

 Fellow inmates,

As you can see in previous thread, I have recently blown the Ribbon Tweeter in my beloved Maggie MG 3.5 when I undertake the Bryston 10B adventure.

To my great surprised, I found out something that seems critical but not ware before.

It's the ribbon tweeter orientation. As I re-read the manual, it's mention specifically that when one is to replace the ribbon tweeter, the tweeter has to be oriented in a way that the serial number label is located in the bottom ends of the speaker.

It comes as a shock to me, my pair of MG 3.5 comes with ribbon tweeter of different orientation as shown by the label. One tweeter has the label on the top end, another one on the bottom end.

Is that normal? I bought the speaker used and the original owner told me that he has not messed with the ribbon tweeter before.

Is it possible that the speaker came out of factor with WRONG orientation?

How can I determine if I have indeed properly orient the ribbon tweeter?

I saw from some old post that the tweeter orientation has effect on its phase so, does that mean I have the tweeter installed out of phase now?

 The right hand motor rule would predict that up or down should not matter. When you put the ribbon in with the serial number up you also reverse the direction of both the flux and current - which would offset each other and produce the correct matching phase. I think serial number down rule is about the positioning of the screw holes. I could be wrong here and would appreciate a follow up from someone who might know.

 Does matter - current direction does not change. It's difficult getting old especially when starting from a not bright baseline.

Did you try to call Magnepan?

It is possible that there was a production change since MG3.5, or the ribbon instructions are wrong for the non-current models.

you´re right that the serial number sticker indicates the polarity orientation of the driver.
