Fellow inmates,

I would like to ask what is the latest arrangement and price for blown ribbon tweeter replacement.

I have the following questions in mind,

1. When I order the tweeter replacement, does it come as a full tweeter with a ribbon in its metal encasement? I have to return the failed tweeter back to Magnepan?
2. What if I failed to return the blown tweeter?
3. Can I full ribbon tweeter as spare?

Thanks.

1. You get the full tweeter. Comes in a protective PVC tube.
2. You will be charged for it. Normally they charge for the repair, the core and shipping. You have time to return the core for credit.
3. In effect you can. Fail to return the core and you will not be reimbursed for it. If you need one then you can order two and keep the unused one. I would not know how Magnepan looks on that. I get the impression that they discourage doing this but I don't know that.

About $100 each to get a new one (in metal encasement)and then return bad one(s).
As I recall, about a $300 deposit or core charge each. So, if you do not return the old ones, you can keep it for about $300 extra ($100 for repair, $300 for core, ~$400 total).

I also read that there is a kit that one can order to change the blown ribbon within the old encasement, is this option still available?

Given the fragility of the ribbon, I can't see how a layman can do it, does the repair kit come with some special tools to aid the handling while repair?

Yep, I rebuilt one of the ribbons with the Kit. It comes with enough ribbon to do 3 tweeters, and that is because they figure you will mess up one attempt, glue, spacers, etc.
One must have a steady hand to be sure, it's do able, but not for the faint of heart.
I forget which who, but one member has done this many times.
It took me about 10-12 hrs and some gray hair.
Next time I just get the whole ribbon off Magnepan, for what they charge, it's a no brainer.
