I'm happy to report that my SMGa rebuild is complete. If you look at the 1986 SMGa brochure on MUG, well, that's exactly what they look like. Oak stiles with black cloth. Only difference is that mine have grey feet, the original socks were off white. Maybe I'll paint them, maybe not.

This was a long project, but not because it was particularly difficult.

The socks and replacement capacitors and binding posts (Cardas) were easy to find. The fact that I had only minimal delam on one speaker, these are 1986es, made the DAP part easy.

I had to do a little bit of creative drilling and widening on the frames to get the BPs to fit, but it was no big deal.

Peter helped me out with the caps, thanks again. Yes they are a problem to remove. But your suggestion worked perfectly.

The delay was largely caused by by the unavailability of DAP Touch'n'Tone clear acrylic to stabilize the panel adhesive. This was sort of like Monty Python's Quest of the Holy Grail, but I found it at last.

Thanks also to those who suggested fixing the rear layer of the socks as opposed to the front first as the Magnepan directions indicate. Your way is better.

I could not have done this without the asylum's help.

The speakers sound great and look better than new.

Thanks again.

I have done a similar thing running Linauem tweeters with MG1 improved. I use them in my office setup. I like the way they sound...always found the MG1 a bit shy in the high end.

You might very well be asking why I did this. You would be sensible to do so.

When I have allegedly better speakers that are mo' better tweaked and are better fitted to my environment.

Why do I like the SMGs so much? I don't know.

I do like my 1.6s a lot. But I wouldn't go to the trouble of rebuilding them. I wouldn't rebuild a Dynaco A25 either, although I liked them well enough.

I'd take the trouble with the SMGa. And to get it perfect.

I don't know why. Maybe it was the right speaker at the right time for me. It certainly sounds good. I think the presentation is superior to the 1.6QR although it's obviously a lesser speaker.

Who knows. It all depends on what we value.
