As I had replied in an earlier post, showing a photo of my setup, someone suggested putting the tweeters inboard to improve imaging.(3.6's)
I tried that and indeed it did make the stage deeper and a bit more to the width of the room (narrow it)
However, as suggested, it did also did make the highs more "dominant", sometimes more harsh, but not always. As I've learned along the way, it seems much of this relates to artists and recordings.
So, I tried putting the resistor back in the tweeter attenuator slots.
Yes, that mellowed the harsh bits, but the "Good recordings" were a bit well....less?

I'm going through the rest of the weekend with the tweeters inboard , but I'll swap in the miller choke later to see what/if that does anything.

Although I can understand why inboard tweeters may be preferred, I found the outboard sound, as I had been listening for quite a while, to work best for me.

There was a tighter focus on the vocal placement, with the tweeters inboard, and the stage did seem deeper, but not with ALL recordings. In my room, the blending of the entire sound was much improved in the outboard configuration as well.

The width of the stage/image was also greatly extended in the outboard setting. I find that much more appealing.

Keith it doesnt have anything to do with inboard or outboard.

It has to do with the tweeter position. Try inboard but keep the tweeters in the same place (by moving the speaker over). The midrange has some influence on things too and with an inside position (with the same tweeter position) your midrange distance is wider and produces a wider stage too...as long as you dont go too far.

Outboard is though the default for big mags purely because with limited space you can get the tweeters wider. Now if you have room and can get the widest tweeter distance with an inboard placement, you will get the biggest stage possible without giving up anything.

SO it really has to do with which placement can give the widest tweeter placement without going too far.

As you have eluded...The room won't let me do that!
It's only 14' wide! the speakers are only 24" off the side wall as it is.
And I really can't run the system on the long wall, the picture window is there, and the 60" TV would block it!
So, for my room, I think tweeters out is the way to go.

But I do get your point, I'd like to have the space to try that so...
I'll commit to buy a powerball ticket for each drawing, that way I can improve the room dimensions as well!

I use tweeters out which gives the same soundstage and imaging results as the others have posted. This also works much better with my center channel speaker for multi-channel audio and HT purposes.

According to Magnepan, the tweeters should be 1" to 2" farther from you than the mid/base which means alot more toe in with them on the inside. Start there but I think our ears are the best test instruments. Mine work best for me on the outside.

I've experimented extensively with both, but I always seem to come back to tweeters out for the warmer, more natural sound.

I find if you have very good focus with the tweeters on the inside, switching them to the outside with give a better stage, imaging, width, all will sound more natural.
If your focus isn't that great with tweeters inside, I find moving them to the outside a step backwards.

Always remember to experiment with toe in.
YMMV
