after reading a few posts , I am more confused then ever. dealers are telling me velodynes aren't fast enough for a maggie. so what is ?? i am pushing them with 840 cambridge seperates. there seems to be a big jump in price from 1,200 to approx 3,000.00 for a "quality " sub ?? love to hear from my fellow maggie fans on this one. respectfully yours Jeff

I used a pair of Vandersteen 2WQ subs for a while, but I really got a big improvement in my room by going to the SWARM system sold by Audiokinesis. It uses a 2-channel plate amplifier to distribute bass via 4 bass speakers which you scatter about the room. The theory is that you can more effectively load the room for bass this way, and get a better match for the way dipole bass works to seamlessly work with the Maggies. I got mine on sale for less than $1,000 for the four speakers.

The REL, the Vandies, and the SWARM are all excellent choices. If you go the DIY route, there are some important potential pitfalls, so be careful (issues like cabinet resonances, driver choices, and crossover hardware/software can make or break the results).

I have an ACI Titan in the "music" room that is 17 X 30 with the crossover to the sub set at about 60 Hz. I also have a piano in that room (baby grand) and although the 1.6 + ACI does not sound EXACTLY like the piano, it is very close. My wife often thinks it is me playing piano when it is someone else over the Maggies + ACI Titan. I am quite happy with the combination.

with my Velodyne DD-15 and DD-12. Both have worked well individually with my 1.6's and 3.6's. Now I have my DD-12 as a "slave" sub for HT and DD-15 as my main music/HT sub.

Happy listening.

If you're just looking for some boom for HT applications buy a Velodyne, Rel, Vandersteen, Rythmic, SVS, Hsu or some other ported/sealed box sub. OTOH, if you're interested in better sound you should look into a dipole woofer. A dipole is the only type of woofer that you will get to integrate well with your dipole speakers.

DIY Dipole Woofer.

M,

Wouldnt 2 normal subs be better than one dipole for the same amount of money?

I recommend using two dipole subs.

I have the REL T2 in a decent size room and love them. I adjusted the crossover point to ~ 40Hz and they add to the excellence of the 1.6 sound without you knowing that there is a sub in the room. Meaning..no booming, just accurate.

I have just added a pair of Vandersteen 2WQ subs to some 2.6Rs with very good results already. I have only used the temporary cross-over so far and the integration is very good. I here to term "speed" when discussing subs with Magnepan speakers but I think room factors and placement are also just as important. In fact, I used a Quad l-ite sub with the Magnepans and the results were also very good. Not as good as with the Vandersteens.

Vandersteen 2WQ have worked beautifully for my Maggie 3.6. Whatever you use make sure you use one sub for each speaker. Rels are actually a little slower than the Vandy's plus i really like the vandersteen concept of adding a crossover at source makes for a much more seamless interaction.YMMV

What subs are the dealers selling? A lot of inmates have used Velodynes with success. I use a Rel Strata III for my IIIa's. Do a search on this topic and you will find other suggestions as well.

I plan to procrastinate my demise for as long as possible. In the meantime, I practice by putting off all the little stuff.

I use a Strata III with my 1.6s. Works well, and seamlessly.

This configuration would make the best sub for the 1.6 if you can find a build for it. GR SW-12-16FR Designed for a open baffle from Rythmik.

Well, I was curious about it is more like it. :)
TBH, I've worked out the total pricing needed to make one subwoofer channel, at $349 for the plate amp, $149 each per 12" GR Research woofer, add some shipping allowance, that works out to around $700-750. Add cabinet materials and finish (if DIY) and we're around $800. Add import duties and taxes if you're in Canada and now we arrive around a cool $1K. No labour included to build the cabinet.
At or around that price one can buy a "proven" subwoofer, particularly if one is not impartial to buying used (REL Strata, Vandersteen 2WQ, ML Depth, ACI Titan....?). My curiosity has pretty much waned.

I Agree. It's not worth pursuing, unless someone manufactures the unit. A large room is required and placement is critical.

To me it's about spending $1K on something that may or may not work well. My room is fairly large (17 x 24), and it's also dedicated so the placement is not an issue. Just can't get myself to spend that much on a "potentially" good sounding kit.

I think the Rythmik servo subs are great. Ascend acoustics sells built subwoofer's using rythmik's servo plate amp and driver for a pretty reasonable price. All of them are under 1000 USD, including the 15 inch model.

I don't doubt it., posted on October 28, 2009 at 20:05:06

But I have no way of knowing for sure that I would be happy with it short of spending that $1K. I've personally heard the 2WQ among others, will probably never hear one of these unless I DIY.

This push-pull sub design known as the "W" seems to be very easy to make.
I wonder what other considerations need to be made?

I just took delivery of a Martin Logan Depth i, it mates extremely well. I think your room and progarm material makes a big difference on the integration. Prior to the ML I was using a budget 12" sub in a rear ported box and it mated quite well acutally. The only time it was noticably slower was on very fast and musical baselines. I could have lived with it for sure, but I found a good deal on a almost new ML Depth so I jumped on it.

Powered, servo-controlled subwoofer using "BalancedForce Technology," in sealed enclosure. I agree a very good sub. The difference is Open Baffle.
I have never heard a sub going below 20Hz without using room boundary effects and this one does. This dipole cannot be placed anywhere. It will need toe-in at all frequencies even below 20hz, because it is directional.
