I just discovered him and heard some of his most recent (posthumous - he O.D'd in 2005) CD yesterday and he was REALLY damn funny... and smart.
Spacey, stoned/loaded, and minimalist in his delivery of intelligent/unique observations. A good (best) bit of Carlin there.
I'm real tough on comics too - mace 'em when I can, play their records at the wrong speed, give 'em intentionally wrong information when asked for directions, etc.

Great Hedberg thought in the CD notes along this line: "Do tour, play shows, get paid, tell jokes that take three weeks to get. Start another tour in three weeks."

If you're into comedy recordings he's as good as I've heard.
