Take it easy and get better. As others have said, the world will survive while you recuperate. If you stay down and relax, you can be back and at your best in short order. If you don't, you'll just be torturing yourself.

About thirty years ago, I was working the emergency room one night and heard this exchange:

Husband: So, what did you find? Why is she having trouble breathing?

Doctor: Well, based on our preliminary exam, your wife has acute angina.

Husband: I know THAT, but what's wrong with her?

I just spent the last hour trying to get into three different Urgent Care centers (for confirmation), but the shortest wait time I found was an hour & a half. Needless to say I didn't wait...

The one closest to me opens @ 9:00 tomorrow morning, so I'll get packed-up today and hit them first thing in the morning. After that, I'm on the road....

Well, better than an ugly laryngitis. Sry, a little medical humor (microscopic).

Hope you feel better. Z-Pack?

You lost me on that one, but I'll be trying to get in to see a doc tomorrow morning for confirmation.

Z-Pak is the trade name for the antibiotic azithromycin. It is used for middle ear and some sinus infections as well as sore throats. It is also sometimes given following influenza to protect susceptible persons from getting a secondary bacteria pneumonia.

Azithromycin has a number of qualities that make it popular among PCP's AND patients. First it's oral, patients like that. It is reasonably broad spectrum, no need to actually care what bacterium ( or IF a bacterium) may be causing the infection! AND most importantly, it has very few side effects, no worries about getting sued. These combined, have led to major overprescription of the drug by PCP's. Likewise, it's become so popular with the public, who EXPECT to get drugs when they go to the doctors, that folks don't even know what it is, they just ask for Z-Pak.

If you don't have a fever, save your money, your laryngitis is most likely the result of a viral upper respiratory infection upon which azithromycin will have no effect. You'll get better on your own.

If you go to the urgicare they will give you an antibiotic (and very likely azithromycin) because they want you to feel that you got your money's worth and come back to them the next time. All of medicine is no longer science and it's this part that accounts for some of the increasing cost of health care. /rant/

When I went to the Doc last Monday (concerned about my trip next week), he wrote me a scrip for "Amoxicil/Clav 875/125" since I often get a sinus infection after fighting "the crud". I know it won't do anything against a virus, and this is a "just in case" against a possible sinus infection while I'm out of town.

Which reminds me, we can land a man on the moon, but we can't treat a virus? What the hell?

But not with bacterial antibiotics. Preventative = vaccines. Acute stages = Immunoglobulin (some specific for the particular virus). Like Rabies Immunoglobulin after a bite from animal with an unknown history.
Bacterial antibiotics, like you said, are for secondary bacterial infections popping up, after the initial viral infection.

BTW: Amoxicillin/clavulinate is Augmentin. This antibiotic is better against gram negative bacteria than Azithromycin (which has good gram positive coverage). Difference is most community acquired upper respiratory infections (URI) are gram positive in origin (staph or strep). Thus, Azithromycin is a good first line choice. Most gram negative URI's are hospital acquired. But, can also be prevalent in health care workers or ppl who have a tendency to get URI frequently and have bacteria which have developed resistance to first line gram positive coverage.

Often, it comes down to what antibiotic the MD is most comfortable and familiar prescribing. The only way to really know which antibiotic (if any) is the best is to take a culture and sensitivity test of a suptum sample. Problem is by the time the results are back, you either are over the cold or have worsen symptoms. So initial coverage with an antibiotic for severe cases is still considered appropriate.

Jim, Sorry. It's a four day pack of Azithromycin (Zithromax) antibiotic. Usually given for bronchitis/laryngitis acquired in the community (as opposed to the hospital).

The workplace can get by without you for a few days. Take care of yourself and get better.

Yup. As my new boss told me yesterday morning, "It'll all be here for you when you get back". Since he doesn't know how to do "jack", I don't think he was kidding....

Thanks! Too bad we didn't hook-up today, but with my voice (or rather, lack thereof), and packing for NY today, it wouldn't have been all that enjoyable anyway.
