I go to make a phone call on my land line phone and the line is dead. Check another phone-same thing. But my DSL, which is on that line is working. Bills are paid.

Regardless of which service I used, I had problems if the old telephone lines were being used for data transfer. Well, with the phone lines too. The lines are old, so anytime it rained, I would have problems ranging from mild to severe static on the phone line. The worse the static, the slower the DSL. Since the lines belong to Verizon, they would have to come out and do the repair, regardless of who I had the service with. Of course, if it was somebody else, first their tech had to come out & have a looky around.

There are 5 splices in view of my dining room window.

I can't tell you how many times I've called for repair.

I finally switched to Verizon Fios. Great speed on the comp, completely static free phone service w/long distance included and very good picture quality on my old 1995 27" JVC TV. The bundle cost $113 a month.

Oh yeah. Comcast. A few years ago they started billing me. I have never, ever, subscribed or used or had anything to do w/Comcast. They billed me for 3 or 4 months & after repeated attempts to sort out their stoopidity, I finally had to threaten to take legal action before they "credited" my "account" and stopped billing me.

I live in an older part of town and the main telephone lines where lead lined and they would leak after heavy rain and I could hear faint conversations and static under those conditions. They did solve that problem several years back. A service guy showed up around noon yesterday. He checked if the problem was inside or outside. It was outside. He said he would do some testing. He disappears and an hour later I see a bucket truck down the street. Periodically I picked up the phone to see if I had service and heard a signal being transmitted. They must install a transmitter and then check down the line to find the problem? Well, at 4:30 the phone rang and it was their tech telling me service was restored. I started to ask him what he found and he hung up before I could get it out. It had to be several block away. Not bad service for sending a on line request for service that morning

the problem is outside the house, so he is on the trail to find the short. The nut eaters often use the phone lines as a super highway and one might have chewed my connection. Hehe

the word is spelled weird, like some of the stuff that's posted here.

The solution may be to get VoIP service and keep your phone number. Ma Bell sees the handwriting on the wall that they're dying, except to provide the infrastructure for broadband Internet service. One of these days phone service will be pretty darn close to free, with free (or near free) long distance anywhere in the world.

had my spell check turned off. I hope you are right. I seldom use the land line and it cost me $40 plus a month

but it "looks" right, even when spelled incorrectly.

There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!

No, it doesn't. Not to these eyes. Spelling errors jump out. But then, I've always been a little obsessive about spelling.

A month ago, my DSL crapped out, but my phones worked. After swapping modems, and spending weeks on the phone, it was determined, that something happened to the phone lines *in my house* (huh?). My DSL is now about at dial up speed. As soon as I get some time, I'm just going to call Comcast and get cable internet.

I hope they don't give me the same diagnosis. I have one phone on the same outlet as the DSL modem (with the provided filter). I am hoping Bruce is right and the phones can be down while the DSL still works.

They are ok once you get them out, went with them myself after dicking around with other services.

As far as your land line goes, the phone company loves to come out and play with your wires, they charge a ton for it. Every time I had a problem I had to keep telling them it was outside the house. Once it took 2 weeks for them to fix the problem after they insisted it was my inside wiring. Needless to say the problem was a block down the street with one of their switches or something. I canceled the service a week later.

Your problem is most likely either outside or with the computer or modem itself. It's their modem so should be covered but that's just a guess.

I got a new modem, that was the first guess. Supposedly, Verizon checked the lines, and they were fine up to my house, but I trust them about as far as I can throw them. I don't care, tired of dealing with it. As soon as I have the time, I'll switch.

Hopefully you have a cell phone so you can dial 611 and see what the deal is. That's happened to me a couple of times before, but it is always my DSL that goes dead. I suffered a couple of really painful lessons from it all. Instead of just being patient and waiting to see if DSL came back up, I called (India) customer service and promptly made a mess out of everything. Apparently they are not in the loop as far as service failures are concerned, and are only programmed to help you screw up your HDD. Never again.

Thanks Bruce. I did send a repair message via the internet. I just couldn't understand why the DSL was still up. You experience with India is well received. I recently bought the top of the line Belkin wireless router. Damned if I can get it to work with my laptop. I have been on the line to India several times to try and correct it. They try to be helpful but I have problems with their dialect and use of words.

One day Mujibar decides he wants to work in tech support. The job interview goes well, but as a final test the interviewer asks him to use the words pink, yellow, and green in a sentence.

Mujibar pauses to think for a moment and says, "OK, I've got it."

"The telephone goes green, green, green, I pink it up and say, 'Yellow, this is Mujibar, can I help you?'"

You've probably spoken with him!

For those who may be offended, sorry, but it's a joke!

and install my wireless router. I never realized how badly I needed it until spending the last couple of weeks here at home, having to fight with my wife for computer time. Now I am wondering if just two computers would be enough. ;~)

Good luck. I am sure your issue will be resolved in short order.
