Today I bought a pair of empty JBL 4648A cabinets from a guy who runs a great junk shop in north Georgia. He told me that with AMC's purchase of the Carmike theater chain, all of Carmike's theater audio equipment in Atlanta (17 theaters) is being replaced, making quite a bit of JBL equipment available on the used market. Typical would be the above mentioned 4648 cabs, 2360A horns and 2446 drivers. I don't know if this is occurring all over the country but it certainly might be.

For anybody within driving distance of Athens, email me off line and I will tell you where you can get loaded 4648 cabinets for $250 each. These are still available new from JBL for $1,500. Very low WAF though.

Hi
Not interested in the JBL gear (we supply gear at work to several movie outfits now) but having moved to Dahlonega recently, am very interested in the reference to a "junk store".
If inclined, e-mail me the name etc

Hi G
Thanks man!
Hey i like it here, especially in the winter compared to northern Illinois haha.
They are talking about having some kind of "Horn" bbq this summer / fall here and if that happens you were one of the horn guys i was going to invite.
Best,
Tom

Values have drop correspondingly. I gave away 3 EV cd horns 3 JBL like you posted. Far more pulls than any demand for them. So free to $300 each is about the value today. Drivers are good enough to re-purpose for home use the big CD horns not so much so though others do swear by them.

Why not just tell us here?

Unless you have a financial interest. That would explain your reluctance.

Be of service.

Gee Inmate51, I'm a bit offended, though this being the internet I suppose I shouldn't be.

I have no financial interest in this what so ever..

It's Vic's Vintage in Athens GA. I have been giving his personal cell out to those who contact me offline, and did not post it here for obvious reasons. Having people contact me first enables me to filter out anybody who is ignoring the "driving distance from Athens" part, and also provides me a chance to network with other north GA high efficiency enthusiasts.

Hope that assuages your curiosity.

Gary

Hi Kloss.

Dropping values are what I am hoping for, though if one has a substantial "investment" in this stuff already I could appreciate feeling otherwise.

Clean used 2226 woofers seem to be maintaining a price of around $125 (plus shipping) on the big auction site. I need another "H", but am trying to find something locally. If the price comes down a bit that's more better for me. If I were better "hooked up" maybe I could find nice loaded cabinets cheaper than the stated $250, but alas...

Yes, opinions vary on 2360A for hi-fi use. I have somebody who says he will give me a pair, but I will need to buy drivers and throats and (buy or make) mounting brackets. The 2446 drivers are also going for around $125 (+ or -), and I expect will maintain that value pretty well too. All in all not a hugely expensive experiment, with very good up-side potential.

Could you be anymore obnoxious!

What if he did have a financial interest. It's America! We love financial interest here.

He was nice enough to post a heads up and you respond with an accusation?
Now every audiophile w a computer in Asia is going to be calling Vics. Is it that hard to email someone?

Hey look... there's a baseball in your yard. Great opportunity to yell at some kid.

I picked up a set of the exact system pictured that came out of the Hollister movie theater that was being renovated about 10 years ago and for less than $100.

Word of warning: These systems need a _big_ room to get an idea of what they'll do. Make sure the crossover is included. You'll need the boost required for the Constant Directivity (CD) horns flares, too. They are _huge_ 'baby cheek horns. I sold the horns off to a guy in Los Angeles. The bass bins are in Raleigh, NC.

I live in a 1200 sf house so there's no way I could use them effectively.

Cheers,

David

Hi David. Great info. I live in a fairly large house but I have a wife, so basically I have the same issue.

Can we assume the issue is primarily with the horn rather than the woofer cabinet?

If so, that brings us back to the topic of finding a 2" horn that sounds good in a small room.
