I'm thinking of putting together a new HE speaker setup using Altec 511b horns with GPA 902-8a drivers, and GPA 416-8c drivers mounted in 10 cuft MLTL corner cabinets. I'm thinking of crossing them at 500Hz. Can anyone recommend a good crossover type for this? 1st order, 2nd order butterworth? Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Dan

The 902-8A minimum freq recommendation is 1200hz

The 902-8T can high pass at 500hz

It is NOT recommended to cross the 902-8A @ 500hz!

You risk damaging them @ 500hz

Like PS guy said 1200 for those drivers (@ 12db slope)
I think the smaller 811b horn would be a better choice
in this case. I see no advantage, using the 416, to go
below 800 Hz, as the 416 probably sounds better than the horn will
there and below.

It may be worth checking with GPA directly because the freqs used in the two previous posts are for original Altecs whereas the GPA versions indicate a 500Hz lower limit at rated power.

Thanks Kyle. I'm using flea powered SET amps so figured that was OK for the 902.

One other thought, I wouldn't use the 511 down to 500Hz. I don't think it loads properly. It sounds best crossed over at 800Hz. I think this is also this case with the 811, it sounds better crossed at 1200Hz. Many recommend using these horns half an octave above the cutoff frequency for best results.
I read that an 811 with a 416 (a la model 19) has lobing that provides better integration when crossed at 1200. I may be wrong.

The 511 should be fine at 500Hz. That was what it was designed for. I remember reading that its actual cutoff is about 375 or so. Use at least a second order slope, 4th order LR is better. Using a low power SET you most likely will not have any problem. I used to use a 60W amp on my 511/802 combo, and never had any problems (500Hz/2nd order, bi-amped), and I listened at realistic volume levels.

As already noted or implied, only the early 802 and its 808 variant can load properly down to 500 Hz on a 511 with all others needing at least 800 Hz for decent power handling, especially for prosound or when excessive shelving is required to mate to a so-so efficiency woofer, though with flea power it shouldn't be an issue even if you need a bit of extra CD horn EQ to flatten it out.

Haven't messed with tubes since the '60s, so all I know is that 2nd order with an auto-former and woofer impedance compensation same as Altec N500G except for 8 ohm would be a good traditional XO.
