Lowthers are very tasty. My dogs prefer Nordost cables the more costly the better and my older Mastiff enjoyed a 18in woofer as a snack.

my rat terrier chewed up my SE45 amp; output transformers didn't have end bells. came home and he was carrying around a 45 tube in his mouth.

So far no amplifiers have been consumed. But I knock on wood. I do hope the 45 SET wasn't plugged in?

nope, no hot dog in the listening room

my wife joked that had it been on, he would have been a "blown woofer"

Ouch! I feel the pain.

I had a cat which liked to "spray" the electrostatic speakers i had built.
The only fix (as he already was) was to keep him out of the room and build new ones.

Hahaha! That's funny! nt, posted on August 7, 2011 at 14:23:27

John, Could you tell us a little more about the front basshorn? Drivers, efficiency and so on. I assume this is the one that took 6 people to deliver to your home.

Took 6 hired men and my neighbor,my wife,my brother and I to get the beast in my home. I did design it to fit through standard doorway. 10hz-100hz 94db 1 watt 8 ohm about W about 850lbs. I used a custom built 15in driver designed just for horn loading. I can use up to 4 per horn. Horns can be stacked together, bass horn couples to mirror image on floor. Can produce infra sound. Will pressurize most any space. I designed it to generate great pressure at low or extreme volumes. Its so powerful that even at levels one can easily talk over if low bass is present it can cause your eyes to loss focus. Has low coloration for such massive size its all fully braced 1in birch ply with 2x6 and 4x4 bracing. Doubled on baffle. Has a 20ft horn path, 100% American made except for supra wire other wise all screws glues plys transducer finish etc all USA sourced. I sell versions of these for material testing and research use. I do have a smaller bottom firing version I sell to audiophiles. This ones designed for music Gaming and HT use. Its on much of the day even my child uses it.

John,

Trying to get your son into extra thick glasses prematurely? ;-)

RE: Bass horn, posted on August 9, 2011 at 10:55:39
Most of what he watches or plays doesn't have allot of low bass. The amp many times turns itself off since not much signal present. But at times he likes to watch water tower demolitions on youtube and I have to run and turn off the bass horn. He always looks a bit mad when I turn it off.

Excellent!
Or as C.M. Burns would say
EXCELLENT!!
Cool project.
Best,
Tom
Would that be about 60in tall?

RE: Bass horn, posted on August 9, 2011 at 11:25:46
76in h was going to install 3 but wife said no no no! Still 1 is over kill in a home so optimized this one for less peak output but with lower response at lower listening levels.

Cool, what did your horn path length end up being?

It is hard to describe what headroom or extension sounds like to someone unless they have heard it too, I bet that is excellent with movies too.

Reminds me of that song that could have gone “I like big horns and I cannot lie, those little horns make me cry” and so on.

Do you have wheels on it?
I have large horns from work here occasionally but I keep them on wheels so I can move them around, take them outside to measure etc.
Here is a full range horn I have now, it’s 60 tall + wheels.
Best,
Tom Danley

About 20ft path. I use dolly's on these if wheels are installed a bit to large to fit doorways. I had to move the front bass horn upstairs since my homes on a hill thus the Egyptian moving style, lots of guys, things to slide horn on. And its installed in my loft where it over hangs a bit. More fun. But to me worth it. I had to move the old one out that wasn't as bad thanks to gravity but still it was a 8ft h horn with 4 18in. I would like to say nice horn but not in a rude way. I do try keep up on what you offer Tom I have respect for you as a designer. Most of my bass systems are to large to even move easy on wheels need 2 people. So once installed its near glued. Sure a pain to build move house but the reason I do it is because nothing else is close. I have to have bass horns in my personal systems.

I'm sure there is a big difference between what you can build to sell, and what you can build for your own use. Very nice setup, both of you. Most of the time I am satisfied with what I have made, but every once in a while, I think it would be fun to try a big horn.

Hi Freddyi
Pretty cool, and extending the path length will lower your lf corner as the load will be felt by the diaphragm.

When I was little, one of my favorite things was the windup motor from my Grampa’s old Victrola.
It had been at their cabin in northern Minnesota where my Mom and her family spent their summers (3 portages from the car and a telephone).

It was really oily so I couldn’t bring it in the house and living outside wasn’t kind to the brass gears etc but I loved watching the flyball governor.
When city water came through our neighborhood, my Dad filled up our well with junk and one of the things he tossed into it was my motor, I was really bummed.
Hey is that a Tesla coil I see?
Best,
Tom

Boy your cabinet is gorgeous and would look that way even without the beautiful woman!

I always end up nicking or otherwise screw up the finish on nice stuff like that.

Except for the number of drivers, it reminds me of a bigger version of an old Jensen cabinet (an imperial maybe?) I made in the way old days.

I still lived at home and wanted to make a cabinet in the maroon “how to build loudspeakers book” by Don Davis and Alex Badimif (sp?).

It was big so I cut it into two halves.
It was made of plywood we got from a pile mysteriously sitting next to the side of the road so it was not “nice” (like CD or worse).

I was really happy when it was done but that was short-lived when we reached my parents narrow back door, neither half would fit through the doorway even with the door removed.
The second cabinet set was not built and these stayed outside (mouth on top) and over the next year becoming a pellet gun backstop and then wasp nest, an eyesore according to Dad and then finally a bonfire.

Anyway, very nice work!
Best,
Tom

Thanks for the kind words. It is a big modified Imp. So far I have been able to fit the giants through doorways. I measure much before designing. I do have designs for ultra lite bass horns I built a few for locals, giant but 2 man can lift.
