Saw some empty cabinets in a place where I could get them if I wanted. Are the cabinets worth picking up and rebuilding with vintage or new components?

I decided to pass. I am just going to hold out until a pair of Model 19 that I can afford comes along. The longer I wait, the more I can afford to spend so I think that is just what I am going to do. And getting those cabinets to my house was going to be a bigger pain than it seemed they were worth. But thank you everyone for the input!

I think so, if you want to get into Altec. It will probably cost more to piece it out than to find complete speakers. Might be worth waiting until a pair of 19's come by.
Just as an aside, I had new cabinets built using the drivers, horns, crossover and front plate from my 846. I had the bass box narrowed deepened and a bit taller to increase the volume. I turned the LF face plate on end so that I have mirrored speakers. The horns are in their own box akin to the 19 sitting on top. This gave more volume for the LF drivers and I believe a little deeper bass. The HF is also a little higher, closer to ear level. My next move is to build a model 19 crossover for them.

Hi Paully.

I have a pair of 416As (Valencia)with the original components. They are very nice looking but sound is boomy. I am still undecided as to what to do with them but I'm pretty sure there's better cabinets for the 416s.

And I missed a pair for $500 and haven't been able to find another pair for under $1,500. But I thought that this could be fun and maybe even be able to build a pair that could beat out my Klipsch Chorus.

Condition, condition, condition! If the cabinets are in decent enough condition they definitely have potential. Check out this recently completed ebay auction #120484373550 and decide for yourself.

But I would only offer $50 or so.

Could be an inexpensive way to "back into" Altec sound that piques your interest - pick up the cabinets, get the 416's, 811's, 802's and 19's crossover (or build one). I doubt that the project can be wrapped for $500, doubt that very much in fact, but you'll get to experience Altec sound, and when empty 19 cabinets come along, all your goodies will bolt right in!
