Picked up a minty pair last weekend locally. Cabs had to go but the drivers are immaculate.

Should I try to get into the x-over inside the rear covers and recap or just use as is.

Not sure what enclosure to try these in. Found the plans for the Marquis online. Don't have any corners for the Aristocrats. Should I try open baffles?

What about a BR design with modern software? Anyone have a proven design?

Thanks,
Dogwan

I think there were a couple different versions over the years, so some variations can exist, but a pair I have are fairly early with a three way xover switch. Woofers measure 8 ohm nominal and the tweeters are 16 ohm nominal. The switch simply switches resistors in or out of parallel with the tweeter. "Extended" had no resistor in parallel, "Flat" had 2.7 ohms, and "Roll off" put 1 ohm in parallel with the tweeter.

Mine had electrolytic caps, marked 3 uf and measured 3.2 uf. Not a lot of room under the cover to shoehorn in a polypropylene(unless low voltage) but you might parallel a couple smaller caps and make them fit.

Mine have a peak centered at about 6.5kHz that I never did flatten out satisfactorily. Probably just cone edge breakup; light foam or polyfill under the whizzer didn't help. Some kind of damping at the cone edge might help but would not be reversible A second order on the woofer that tamed the peak took the life out of the speaker(at least to me). Didn't try higher order. I recall that while fooling around with the crossovers I reversed the polarity on the tweeters at some xover point and flattened out (nulled?) the peak; I thought I was brilliant...briefly, until I realized how cruddy they sounded that way. Also tried some L-pads and different value caps for the tweeters.

I eventually ended up about where I started with the simple circuit that EV used. In my case I had some large caps that wouldn't fit under the cover so I glued on a PVC pipe cap for the extra room. Instead of the switch I just mounted a pair of binding posts on the pipe cap that connect parallel with the tweeter. This way I can easily attach and change the resistor. Just have to be careful not to accidentally connect the amp to this binding post; maybe use green posts. Funky, but it works.

So I'll second the previous posts, change the caps if they're electrolytic; and these speakers have high Qts and lend themselves to OB's. Let us know how they turn out.

They are very pleasant sounding little coaxes (kind of unassuming, though).

all the best,

IIRC from qts, open baffle would be nice
