Gday inmates. If you can check this link out please of a interesting open baffle. Iam currious if the cut out on the front of the 201 acually loads the driver in any way or is it for show. I have seen this done before. Note how small the baffle is and that the baffle is spaced of the floor. I have been been building ob for a few years now and have learned that I need to learn more. Thinking about trying this.

1) Protect the driver
2) Look nice
3) SLIGHTLY strengthen the baffle

On the downside, there will be a little resonance and diffraction at high frequencies. Not such a biggie, in this particular design, but present and probably audible.

Bass is supposed to sound big. 6.5" is not a woofer size.

The vertical pieces are too small (and the openings too big) to have any effect except at very high frequencies, where they'd cause a very early reflection that would smear things a bit.

Me being a dealer makes you leery?? It gets worse... I'm a manufacturer too.

I cant understand why they would bother if it makes it sound worse. Its a very complex baffle. Perhaps its just for protection.

It's a beautiful piece of woodworking art. That's a perfectly good reason to "...bother [even] if it makes it sound worse".

Hi Paul

I agree it is a nice bit of woodworking.

The Goodmans driver is designed for rear mounting on a baffle, at least the ones I have are. It looks like the outside diameter of the cutout is beveled rather than cut at a sharp 90 degree angle. If it were beveled all the way around, there would be a lack of material to securely receive the screws holding the driver in place. I suspect that the design was a clever way of allowing the driver to be attached securely.

My Goodmans have centrally mounted tweeter horns. I suspect the design would compromise the high frequencies. It might still be worth trying.

Good observation! Thanks, I had completely failed to think of the rear mounting. There will be resonances in a cylindrical cutout, even if the diameter is more than 10 times the depth. Those vertical bars might well break up those resonances, or re-distribute them in a more random (and less noticeable) way.

The feet that raise the baffle off from the floor do not seem to have the same finish as the rest of the baffle. I wonder if they are an after thought to raise the driver height or stabilize the baffle.

Electrovice they did say somthing about setting driver height in the text.

Struts and resonance defusion is a cool idea. I am having fun with this project already. Or maybe a few :) I have lots of ideas for driver mounting. I think I will try a few I havent tried yet including some sort of rubber isolation mounting(Like german radio) and subpanel isolation mounting. I will report back if anyone is interested in this idea.

Yes it is nice. I am tempted to try somthing like it. It did stress in the text that natural timber is the key. All my ob's to date have had some coloration of there own. I have not tried klangfilm style ply on welded metal contruction yet eather.

Perhaps it is just to increase baffle strength. Babblefishing the text didnt help much.

Hi,
Impressed with your open baffle!! Very Nice. Any pics or drawings on how the two wings were attached?

Sweet Yes I like field coils but cant really afford them. I am working on a similar baffle at the moment. I all so finished a baffle today. By modding as set of 70's coral boxes to sit on a reflex loaded richard allen woofer underneath in my bedroom(small). I milled out 3 large square cut outs. One being on top of the box too. I tried some vintage audax in them to start. The top cut out was to much for bass. So I blocked it and got some bottom end. I was just trying them fullrange. They where really nice. I guess there a open back open baffle. I will start on the tricky baffle plates for some german paper cones tomorrow.:)
