I've converted my Altec Valencia's to an active crossover arrangement.

I'm using a Marchand 24 db/oct Linkwitz crossover. I tried 800 hz. Terrible. Then I went to 1200 hz. Very good.

Now, do the HF horns need to be wired in in phase or opposite phase to the woofers? They sound pretty good either way on first listen.

any input appreciated.

thanks

I have Altec 416A, 806A and N800G components in cabinets built from Altec Valencia plans but 6" taller.

Are these different components than Altec delivered in factory Valencias?

hi with both low pass and high pass at the same slopes on an active system should be in phase ,sometimes amps of different calibre can also alter the amp output but you will hear it at 800 to 1200 hz easily
the valencias do use the smaller horn and it is crossed at 1200hz you can also try simple 12 db slopes at 1200 hz as altec intended
i use a marchand crossover as well and could not live without it ,the usni makes altec drivers shine shine shine

Thanks for the reply. What is UNSI?

Did you note any differences using an active x-over with 12 db slope?

thanks again.

ahh typo biggie !!! that will teach me to have a cigratte in one hand ,phone in my ear, and typing with one finger,
well i biamped my magnificents with 12 db and the drivers seemed to be a bit more lively,
for my bigger rig i felt the speaker as a whole and not the sound of seperate drivers ,when using 12 db slopes at 500 hz even though i have 300 hz horns ,i do use the xm26 tube unit(unsi)
what amps are you using?

thats a lot of power now that you have bandwith seperated, i would use a smaller amp on the horn, triode perhaps,my tried and trusty dynaco st 35 really shines on the horns although i use dht now, plus the voice coils can get easily slapped around with some amp pop etc, and use your kt 88 on the woofer , besides full tube sound you can make a passive subs and drive it with the adcom or get another crossover
nothing like a full blown active system to sing and play air guitar active altecs rock
