A month or two back I installed the latest modification to my Sony 940 player from the fertile minds of Jo Rasmussen and Allen Wright. Joe calls this the "terra firma mod" and I supect Allen will call it "level 7".

In rough terms the modification involves an innovative new power supply to power the VCXO in the machines modified by Joe and VSE. I have my self installed every mod VSE have come up with for my machine and each time it has made an appreciable and sonically worthwhile improvement, not just a difference.

This time I believe the mod is a breakthrough in digital sound, at least for me. Those who have heard the level 6 modified VSE machines will know they are great but I have to tell them that they haven't heard anything yet!

There is an improvement in definition across the entire spectrum but while this sonic improvement is important , what is more important is how the machine loses the last vestiges of what I can only describe as a "mechanical" presentation, which I have heard in every single disc player I have heard until now, and replaces that with ease. Music simply breathes; expands and contracts in volume without strain, is achingly pure yet full bodied. I am now hearing more than ever but without any sense of etching or overemphasis of detail. SACD's on this machine fulfil the promise of the medium, and surpass what I had thought possible.

Rob.

Thanks for the mention, Rob, but to give this change any lable is a bit preamture.

You were one of our "test bunnies", who as competent DIY'ers, were given the basics of the change and asked to try them out.

That you (and the others) were so happy with it is wonderful, and has us moving towards offering it as a product.

But in what form that product will finally arrive is not yet decided, and what name it will carry is also not yet decided, and it's still a long way from being called "Level 7" at the moment.

So I request other potential clients not to harange your dealer for info and prices, none are yet available, but will be soon.

Regards, Allen

Might I suggest "I can't believe it's not butter" or something like that! LOL

Ok seriously, I have our beloved NOVA rocker/modder Bill Thalmann's number on speed dial and if the first caller's assessment is spot on "loses the last vestiges of what I can only describe as a "mechanical" presentation", then count me in and let's remember there's a reason why they call it lucky number 7.

Allen, since you may be reluctant to give it a "level" designation you could call it the mezzanine and hedge your bets:-
