Boy, time for spring cleaning around here and one of the first things that got to go is huge box of old TAS's and Stereophiles that date back to the Late 70's. ( when they were both "Reader's Digest" size) It's hard for me to believe they have any value, but also hard just to toss them. Any ideas out there. Thx.................Mick

If someone out there wants them, they will buy them.
And sell them as a full lot only.
One Stereophile, one TAS. List the approximate dates, how many total.
It they are really in prime shape $5 each.
If they are a little careworn, $3 each item in the set.
Seriously you will sell them.

Thx Elizabeth. Time to do an inventory. Most are not mint for sure. If you remember the era, these were our "reference books". No internet....it was either these or talking to people who were buying/selling thru the little Audiomart flyer that came out a couple of times a month. Those in the bigger cities had a nice variety of brick and mortars to visit, but if you were stuck in the boonies, forget it.

About 5 years ago I had a full set of TAS, all the way back to issue #1. On ebay I got $125 for the lot, and was disappointed.

I don't have anything that desirable. It's a bit fragmented by comparison.

If you have any Listeners i will buy them.

eBay is not an audiophile site... here they would garner more interest. also, posted on May 19, 2012 at 21:26:14

You can list them at any price, and gradually, say once a week lower the price until they sell.
Thus you get the best price, and someone will get your treasure to browse through and dream...

By gifting them to the Library you will help build up a bunch of new Audiophiles and perhaps new inmates. Also it would make the audiophiles who missed reading those issues a very happy lot. It would be more satisfying than a pocketful of money.

Cheers

I got my start in Audio by reading "The Stereo Review" at my local library when I was really young. That would be a good idea, a library. If you can even find them nowadays.

I suppose it's worth an inquiry, but don't hold your breath. Local libraries are constantly culling their stacks, and I seriously doubt that they want boxes full of old audio magazines. Heck, they probably don't even subscribe to CURRENT audio magazines. Even if they accept them initially, they'll likely end up in the trash. Let's face it, Mick Wolfe is an audiophile, and even he doesn't want them anymore.

I'd take Liz's advice, sort of. Sell 'em on bay or somewhere, but $3-$5 each is pretty steep. Maybe Half Price Books will give you 25 cents each.

Now, if you had a copy of Leo Beranek's "Music, Acoustics & Architecture", the college library might be interested in that. But why on Earth would you part with it?

Ya know what would be fun? Take a few issues, find a few reviews, and substitute the names of recent/current products into the text. ;)

They rarely add donated books/magazines to their collection. They'll just sell them for 10 cents apiece.

...keep them and read them in your golden years as you reminisce about discovering the wonders of high end auido and more accurarte music reproductin in the 1970s.

Of course I'm biased, but that's what I plan to do.

You won't get as much as they are worth to you.

The current issues, however, are disposable and I would leave those in the dentist's or doctor's office or donate them to the library.

Think 'Donate to library..'
They get old useless junk people donate to try and grab a tax advantage. So the libraries got mountains of moldy, useless dreck.
And yeah once in a blue moon some useful item.
The percentages of good to dumpster kept heading more and more to dumpster. Until they all just realiized it was a total waste of employee time to be sorting through all the crap.

So now, a library might consider a gift only if it was a major $$$ gift. worth even the bother of some head librarian to say yeah we want this.
ANd you actually have to know somebody who knows somebody to get them to think about it. (it has gotten that bad)
And by $$$ I mean they want it AND it is worth over $500 cash on eBay.
500 two dollar Cds aren't going to make them even yawn...

I sold similar large sets of Stereophile and TAS magazines a few years ago. I used Audiogon to list them and sold them all for a reasonable dollar in two big sets. I recall shipping the large batch of Stereophile to Taiwan, so I would make sure that you would ship them anywhere (USPS worked fine for me to ship mags around the world)and that will get you the most value/dollar for them!
Happy Listening,
