Word in the industry is now circulating that a certain "manufacturer" has offered re-branded Hubbell hospital-grade wall outlets (which I recommend) as something different and somehow "enhanced" ...

(yes, by marketing)

and then has had the efforntery (allegedly) to have had knock-off wall outlets made in China and offered as similar grade and at or about the same prices.

Suckers, anyone?

I wouldn't recommend you using a wall outlet, Sam. It requires you to put a hole in your wall, posted on October 30, 2009 at 19:06:43

Oh, wait, that was an outdoor FM antenna wasn't it? Still, no sense pursuing better performance at the expense of a hole, now is there?

Great Tom,

Wow do you have a real scoop! What don't you open your next column -or better yet put this news up on the Stereophile web site, with an expose on this manufacturer. Probably will get you a Pulitzer.

Other than that, has nothing to do with the price of tea in China.

Or was that a GMO (Genetically Modified Outlet).

People buy perceived happieness.

I think that this is why DIY is so alluring. Imagine, actually knowing how your stuff works.

... that can take what looks like a hospital grade wall outlet that sells for between $28 and $33...

and turn it into a $147 cryogenically-treated marvel.

Nothing beats the Tice Clock, though -- a $29.00 Radio Shack alarm clock that was magically transformed into -- what? -- something for ten times the price. And it wasn't clear exactly what it was supposed to do.

Now THAT's profit. A lot of audiophiles went for that one. Was the Myles among them? I don't remember. I have the Radio Shack look-alike. It is a very nice alarm clock and I know it improves the sound of my hospital-grade wall outlets and power cords.

Long live Mpingo discs. Texas water cables. Peter W. Belt.

This is highly relevant to the price of tea in China. The general gist (stench?) of this stuff helps explain why so many hi-fi rags went out of business. And why the hobby, once vibrant, has become so febrile, marginalized and righly ridiculed.

Kudos to Gene Pitts, the late Julian Hirsch and the departed Len Feldman for not even writing about this stuff.

Remember that this is the ASYLUM, and rational viewpoints are not particularly welcome.

If you persist in calling BS on the subjectivists' unproveable delusions, or the shysters' blatant frauds, you may find yourself subjected to the same sort of Stalinist purge recently inflicted on a couple of other doubters, with all your previous posts and all memory of your existence obliterated. (Though apparently, you can still pop in and say "boo" once in awhile, before the thought police detect and annihilate your post).

PS: I have a windup Baby Ben alarm clock, and it improves the sound of my system immeasurably by NOT putting a lot of RFI garbage into the house wiring. It isn't even cryogenically treated!

Nice to see Controversial Tweak angst alive and well. IIRC your own magazine wrote a positive review of the Tice Clock. What's not to like?

I don't understand why more people aren't building tube amps and making franken amps...The transformers/guts are abundant in old hifi radios. As the scarecrow said in the wizard of oz "if I only had a brain" I'd love to build an amp.

I've seen some pretty goddamn impressive hifi amps built from organs/consoles etc...Stereophile should feature a 15 page spread on "Junkyard amps" Get a pile of components and have each team compete with equal resources to build an amp.

Perhaps some of these audiophile capacitor manufactures could donate a few for the cause. It'd be a hoot to see what the basement geniuses could do.
