I wondered, does everyone here with ST70's operate them with the cage on? Until yesterday, I had always operated it without the cage. I did this for more ventilation, but yesterday I attached the cage and ran it for awhile and the cage got pretty hot. Any opinions on whether I should leave cage on or take it off.

this guy is just too curious. He loves to get into things and I'd hate to have him zap himself.

Olddude55,
I just have to reply to your message. I too have a male black cat with the same white hairs on his tummy. The main reason I wanted to go with the cage on is exactly your reasoning, even though my cat has shown zero interest in the ST70, why temp fate or test how many lives he really has?

Jello the Wondercat will do anything for attention and has a knack for getting into places he should never visit.
There's no doubt in my mind that he'd crawl into the Dynaco if given the chance.

Heat is the number main cause of electronic equipment aging.

I'd recommend that if you have no kids or pets and your sure that no-one will come in contact with the pcb that you leave it off

I operate all my Dynaco equipment (3x PAS-3,1x ST70 & 1x ST35) without cages but then I have no children or other pets.

The cage is there for TWO reasons: First, to keep curious fingers from getting SERIOUSLY shocked, but more importantly, the cage is designed to extinguish any flames *if* the unit happens to catch on fire. While it is very uncommon for one to burst into flames, it HAS happened. The perforated cage will extinguish the flames.

(This information came from one of the original guys at Dynaco so if you don't believe me, take it up with him.)

Running my pas-2 without cover greatly increases hum in phono mode.
I run the mkIII's without mostly because I don't have 'em Although, let's face it, one of the best things about tube audio stoff is seeing the tubes glow in the dark when listening at night.

You could drill extra holes in the sides for extra ventilation and/or add a quiet computer 120mm fan (see the SPCR web site for models).(though adding more air would probably negate the fire extinguishing feature)
