Red
Purchased "Red" at Newbury Comic in Boston for about $20. First impression: the MLP Stereo tracks sound great. The video of the quartet is fantastic

From what I understand, the stereo version of Red is the same thing as the 30th anniversary remasters, and unfortunately a lot of compression. I'm still waiting for my copy and reserve the possibility that it sounds great anyway.

In the Court of the Crimson King sounds excellent, and not compressed at all. I really enjoyed it in both RBCD and 96/24 stereo, but is an entirely different, and engaging experience in 5 channel. Judging from the very creative use of all channels, there was obviously a lot of sweat and toil that went into the multi-channel. The artistic use of surround, as opposed to recreating a stage, works really well in this case.

it does sound tremendous; from what I remember from the not-so-much sound of the vinyl

21st Century Schizoid man is very RAW!!!

Did you find it very bass-light? I guess that that was just the recording values of the time/recording... And, - it would've been wrong to add it in where it wasn't....

Being a fan of just about everyone in the band's other projects, - I'm more interested in getting the wonderful "A Young Person's Guide to King Crimson" on some sort of Hi-rez, - and then leaving it alone.

Other than the vinyl, - I've never seen it re-done.

Does it exist?

Cheers,

Not aware of anything in high res for this one. I really like the version of "I Talk To The Wind" on the Young Person's Guide. Great booklet too.

The 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' box set release has been moved back to October 26th.

Usual sources? how about amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Red-King-Crimson/dp/B002GYVRRI/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_c

Strange, the have in the court of the crimson king listed as a DVD-A. I am not 100% sure that is correct. Red and Lizard are up there and though the description is a little unclear I am almost 100% sure, based upon the release date that these are the DVD-A versions. the last of the surround classic rock issues on DVD-a perhaps.

:(

I always check Amazon first, then look for potentially better price elsewhere. they do well with their "used" section through their other merchants also. I am pretty psyched about these and misunderstood the release dates. I knew that Red and Lizard were coming soon, but I thought the In the Court of the Crimson King was only going to be the big box set with 4 discs and that the DVD-A disc would come later. I was incorrect. the 2 disc set they have on Amazon (and probably elsewhere) is the CD and DVD-A disc so we will get three, not two DVD-As. Nothing more until after the first of the year. I am getting older by the day and hope I am still alive when Larks Tongues and Islands come out...

:)

As copied from my DGM newletter-

"40th Anniversary Editions
In 1969 King Crimson's debut album was unleashed upon an unsuspecting public. Its release marked the beginning of a lengthy but unconventional career which has confounded expectations, transgressed boundaries and has kept fans and critics alike on their toes.

To celebrate 40 years of the Crimson Kings, DGM & Panegyric proudly announce the release of a series of CD/DVD-A editions of the original King Crimson studio albums.

Each CD/DVD-A release features the full original album plus bonus tracks on the CD. Two of the titles – Lizard & In the Court of the Crimson King feature entirely new 2009 stereo album mixes by Steven Wilson & Robert Fripp.

The DVD-A presents each album fully remixed into stunning 5.1 Surround Sound with Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) in the producer role and King Crimson founder member Robert Fripp as executive producer.

The first three titles are set for release this year with further titles to follow throughout 2010:

Red: September 21st 2009
In the Court of the Crimson King: October 12th 2009 (various editions)
Lizard: October 26th 2009"

So DVD-A it is, apparently.

"We ask our artists to be true. Actually, we demand that our artists be true. When poets, storytellers, & singers lie to us for money, our culture is diseased & in decline."
-Robert Fripp
