I have one year old Ayre C-5xe with a limited collection of DVD-As and an even smaller subset of DVD-A Dual Discs ("Brothers in Arms" + 5 Talking Heads). Because this forms a miniscule part of my audio collection, I can probably count the number of Dual Disc plays on the Ayre before tonight on one hand.

However I tried playing them all this evening (DVD-A side) and the success rate was about 25% on multiple attempts. A variety of errors including completely inability to read, clock running but no audio output, and most odd, instances where the music would speed up and slow down.

I tried some standard DVD-As and had no problems, and am currently listening to an SACD. I also tried a couple of the DVD-As in a Pioneer 59ai withut problem.

Is the Ayre spec'd for Dual Disc?

I can play the Talking Heads Dual discs on the DVD-A side, - but the redbook side won't play....

:-(

I'm afraid of those things anyway, - I saw my cats snooping around the box that they are located in. I was speculating that those discs might come out at night and infect the others...

Just for one moment, I heard somebody call,
Looked beyond the day in hand, theres nothing there at all

That's the same with my Denon DVD-A player: I've never had a single problem with any of the DVD-A sides, but it does not like the CD side.

Fortunately that's not a problem for me, as I only use the CD side in the car where they play fine.

(In the worst-case, I suppose one could always copy the CD side to a blank CD)

Gosh, - why didn't I think of that?, posted on October 4, 2007 at 12:20:39

Good call.....

In the case of the Talking Heads, "remain in light" Dual Disc. The Redbook side has a bunch of extra cuts that I wouldn't otherwise be able to hear on my main rig.

It's funny as at one time, the Dual Disc of "The Jesus and Mary Chain" Psycho Candy played fine on both Redbook and on DVD-A for my same APL/Denon player. But it doesn't anymore. And, - boy was it a great test to hear the dramatic improvement that the DVD-A had over the Redbook.

Thanks,

It works -- as a test I just copied . . ., posted on October 7, 2007 at 04:41:59

. . . one of my Talking Heads dualdiscs on my Dell laptop's Philips CD/DVD drive. Very smooth & fast first-attempt copy and burn to a blank Maxell CD-R.

And it plays back perfectly.

p.s. Before copying, just make sure the very slightly thicker Dualdisc centre is firmly clipped onto the clamp-less laptop drive tray spindle (i.e. so it spins true with no vibration). This will not be an issue with drives that have a conventional clamp.

Are you willing to take a lie detector test???

Not possible. And believe me, I have had every DVDA failure possible. No offense.

<< Not possible. >>

Sure, anything is possible. Any time you run into a problem that seems absolutely bizarre on the surface, it makes perfect sense when you find the correct explanation.

Don't forget that there are two master clocks in the C-5xe. One is for multiples of 44.1 kHz and the other for multiples of 48 kHz. Normally only one is on at a time. It is possible that somehow the clocks were changing back and forth. That would change the pitch about 10%, which is quite noticeable.

Do we refer to you as Sherlock Hansen now. You described exactly what I heard. Like DUI, I had never heard anything like it before (which is why I described it as odd).

I spoke with Michael and will ship the player back tomorrow.

Sorry for the troubles. We'll get it sorted out for you. Please send as many of the problem discs as you can spare so that we can re-create the problem.

We use a Pioneer manufacturing kit. Pioneer has an official "warning" against the use of Dual-Discs, but I suspect this is more of a political warning than a technical one.

I don't have any experience with Dual-Discs, so I can't give any report there.

The fact that they played in a Pioneer DV-59ai means that it is likely that the transport in the C-5xe needs adjusting, as that model uses the same transport as the C-5xe. If you send it back to the factory along with your discs, we will adjust (or replace if necessary) the transport for you. Call Michael at 303-442-7300 x223 to get an RMA number.

Two months ago I bought a CX 7e, with MP upgrade. Sounds beautiful, love it. But it won't play (obviously the CD-side of) my Talking Heads Dual Discs. It may be the same problem as in this two year old thread, with the C-5xe. Are there similar experiences with a CX 7? Is there a quick solution, or has the transport to be replaced?

Thanks!

FWIW, my Ayre C5-xe plays all four of my Talking Heads dual discs w/o a problem. In fact, the TH dual discs sound absolutely wonderful and I play them often and oftener and they work every time on my unit.
