Mic gain stage needed

I have an unusual application where I need to bump the gain a bit on a microphone before inserting it into the PA system. All I need is a box with an XLR in, an XLR out, and a level control knob in between. I'm wondering if this is something that could be easily assembled from parts at the local Rat Shack.
