I recently purchased a used Musical Fidelity X-RAY V3 CD player that came with a heavy gauge power cord. I decided to use the heavy power cord with my dedicated headphone amp and use the skinny cord with the CD player. The CD player was skipping on just about every track. I returned the heavy power cord to the CD player and it stopped skipping. Who says power cords dont make a difference?

Perhaps the biggest bang for the buck ..., posted on October 30, 2009 at 10:04:53

is a Volex brand pc (part # 17604 I think) which used Belden 19364
14/3 wire, shielded with drain wire, and molded plugs on both ends.
These can be had for probably $15 from several sources, or if you are
a DIYer you can make up the Asylum Power Cord devised by Bob Crump.
Both cheap, both make big differences, at a small cost.

Look for the 17604 made in Mexico., posted on October 30, 2009 at 11:34:58

They now come from Asia, and have plated plug blades. I haven't done the comparison, but I suspect the plating will degrade the performance compared to the unplated version formerly made in Mexico.

Some swear by it, others do hear a difference.
Now you need to get a heavy duty power cord for your headphone amp and perhaps take it up a notch.

Oh right you are! That was my thinking too. Any suggestions?

Depends on your budget.
Least expensive 10ga. cable that 'looks' well built might be Element Cable.
Somewhere around 50-75$.
I see an Iron Lung jellyfish in the classified for 29$. They seem to have a good rep. too. Never tried one, so can't say for sure. THe thing about power cords is that its system dependent and also subjective, I have gone through several price levels, sometimes the differences are puny, other times huge.
So don't be afraid to experiment as your budget allows.
